5mm rimfire

I went to a local gunshow today and ran across a 5mm rimfire, the round looked like a 22 mag but was told that the ballistics resemble the 17 hmr, trouble is finding ammo and was told that midway makes a conversion to turn it into a centerfire. does anyone have any info on the caliber.

Thanks

I believe that the head diameter of the 5mm rimfire is the same as the .22 Hornet and they are useine Hornet case to form a case like the old rimfire case and moveing the fireing pin to the center of the bolat. It should be a real good round, but don`t forget that if you use a rimfire action you are resrticted to very low presures as there are no lugs on the bolt and the bolt handle must restrain all the presure.

There is a kit you can buy that replaces the bolt face and firing pin to convert to centerfire called a 5mm craig, if rimfire ammo ever becomes available you just change it back. cases for 5mm craig are made from 22 hornet.

Remington chambered 2 rifles for the 5mm only difference one is a magazine feed the other is a tube magazine. Bolts on them look like a scaled down model 788. very solid setup, unlike most rimfires. They were good shooters, too bad about what rem did with the ammo.

My advice would be spend your money on some other type of rifle. You will be better off in the long run as 5mm ammo is next to impossible to find and when you do it is,like your friend said, more than the gun.

Steve is right about the ammo normally being very rare, however within the past year, there was a new production run made. I don't know what is left now, but for a while, you could get as much as you wanted at a reasonable(not cheap) price.

Check with some of the rare ammo suppliers, like Old Western Scrounger.

Jack, my understanding when I inquired at O W S was that the production run never came off, was told if they could get X? number of rounds ordered, a run would be made. Haven't heard anything since, but if anyone knows, would appreciate a posting. Personally I believe the 17hrm killed any chance of it happening.

I was just reporting what was posted here. OWS probably knows more than anybody. If he says the new run never happened, it didn't. So the only use for the rifles is for conversions.

I've got 3 rounds. Let the bidding begin..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Pan/Jack,
I would have to guess never will happen. If they come up with enough money(which would be a lot) a run could be made. However, I personally don't think there are enough rifles left for a run. Also, I think the .17HMR as suggested would kill any good intentions except for the special run mentioned. Like most good intentions for rounds, Rem just screwed up with the 5mm too when they came out with it. Would not do what it was suppose too but they put it out anyway.

I have to agree. If they could not come up with enough advance orders to make a production run before the 17HMR was in full swing, they never will now. And you are right, it never was much ballisticlly.

As in the song; "And another one bites the dust" for the final time, this time.

Was told by a rep at OWS that if they could get orders (with deposits or CC#'s) for a million boxes they would produce the ammo again. Man wish I woulda bought that 50 boxes that time for 6.50/box! They wouldn't tell me why its listed on they're site at 9.95 per 50 rds.

Newsflash, just talked to a guy in another forum who says OWS made the 5mm Ammo!!!
OWS also has it in they're online catalog and when you add it to your cart, does not say out of stock! guess OWS is wanting to capitolize on the 17 HMR craze.BTW its 18.00/50

Id like to find one round of 5mm for my cartridge case collection. I have been looking to no avail. Dont want to buy a whole box.

Steve Schroeder in San Diego, Ca. (619-423-3523)makes a nice center fire bolt head replacement for the 591/592 Remington rifles. You knock out the pin holding the front of the bolt and replace with his unit.

He also makes cases for the 5MM Rem. from 22 Hornet cases and makes/sells bullets also. He furnishes head space gauges for the new unit to check that all is OK as well as reloading dies (RCBS and I believe Redding)to reload the small cases.
I have had one of his units on a 591 for about 2 years and really like it. The thing I like about his conversion is that the original bolt head is left intact so if ammo is ever available again at a reasonable price, you could put the original bolt head back on the bolt and be in business.

The 5MM Craig conversion (Certec International in Seattle, Wa.)actually modifies the original bolt head with a cut in the bolt face to accomodate a center-fire firing pin.

The 591/592 actions have a rear locking bolt with 6 rear locking lugs - much like the 788 Remington action. They're not like a typical 22LR action with the bolt handle being the locking device.

I'm a fan of the both the 22 Mag and the 17HMR, but really enjoy the 5MM REM. Center Fire as Schroeder calls it.

Does anyone actually have and also have fired any of the ows ammo? Now with all the talk that they have made the ammo? They told me they needed x000 of rounds ordered before production, also cci would make it. Never heard back that it was made. For me seeing is believing.
