6.5-284

Does anyone hunt with this caliber? I am thinking of re chambering a 6.5creedmoor to this for some added speed. Would like to hunt whitetail a with 120-123gr bullets. I think it would flat hammer the deer with little recoil. Am I wrong?

I don't think you would see an appreciable difference. The Creedmoor makes plenty of speed and would hammer any deer. walking. You will also likely see feeding issues and the x284 is quite a bit longer.

What load are you using now?

I hunt with it. Mine is built off a remmy model 700 that started life as a 270. I shoot the 130 NAB and have had no issues with mule deer, elk or bear. Brass life has been very good I am currently on my 4th loading with the first batch I bought. I will say my go to is the 6.5 creed.

Long story short it's 6.5 creedmoor built on a la. I was just tossing around the idea of utilizing the long action with the 6.5-284.

I'd keep it simple and go 6.5-06. It will likely feed better. Easier and cheaper to locate brass. (Use Lapua either way). And it will get you what you ultimately want, ballistics wise.

I think the 6.5 creedmoor is a wicked round and is more then capable of doing what your asking. If stepping up to the 140hybrids, 143 eld-x, or 140vlds then the added velocity of the 6.5-284 is nice but still not needed. Barrel life is a major factor in this decision as it drops down drastically going from creedmoor to 6.5-284.

I'd personally rather have the 6.5x284. Good factory brass with no fireforming or neck resizing. Barrel life is going to depend on how you load it up.

I was able to run max mag length in an AI mag after cutting a groove in the feed ramp. Feeds like a dream! But.. This was also in short action.

I should have read this better before I responded above.

If your 6.5 Creedmoor is a short action then I would leave it a 6.5 Creedmoor. If it is a long action then I would go with the 6.5x284. Since you mentioned 300 Win Mag length mags, I assumed you have a long action.

Build it as a 6.5/06, simple easy to get everything, and then get yourself a box of the new Nosler 142gr ABLR bullets, with a BC of .720!!! And stack some RL 26 under them, and you can smoke em all day long out to a thousand yards. Your golden. Next step would be a .264WM but why ?????

Thanks for all the responses. I have a LA and was contemplating maximizing the action but will probably just stick with the creed. Just out of simplicity since I already have it. The creed will do everything I need it to, so why spend more money unless I was going to a different caliber (up or down)
