6.5-300 savage

Has anybody ever had one of these? I've got an old 22/250 action, I was thinking about having it rebarreled to 250 savage improved to make a light little deer rifle, but then I stopped to think that i've never heard of a 6.5 savage. Not sure why the bullet choices beat the 25's all to heck. I'm sure nobodies going to be throwing away their 260's for one but it's nice to have something different.

The 6.5x47L is much like the 300 savage case but with a longer neck. That's the route I would go & have. It a GREAT deer hunting cartridge.

I have heard worse ideas. Nothing wrong with doing something just to be different.

But if I'm going to spend my time/money on a wildcat, it is going to be for a performance gain. JMO.

A 260AI would be cool.......

I just thought it would be cool to have a handy little hunting rifle to beat around. Probably do allright out of a 20" barrel, just thought it was weird that I've never heard of one. I was lookin around and I can't even find a reamer for it though. Probably a 260 AI would make more sense. What kind of velocity do you get out of a 6.5x47? I guess I gotta get my hands on a 6.5 before next hunting season.

I don't have a 6.5x47 but I'm sure Coleridge can tell you all you need to know of it.

A 260 Rem can push a 123gr Scenar to 3000fps+.

After much research, and seeing what the 260 has done lately at Camp Perry (and in some of the LR tactical matches), I chose it over the Lapua and Creedmoor 6.5s. However, all 3 are still excellent IMO.....

Hands down for brass availability the 260 is the smart way to go. I like the creedmoor better because it's a little more obscure, but I can't even buy stuff to reload my 22/250 without ordering it anymore so the 260 is looking more and more the way to go. Still it's nice to have something nobody else does....

The 6.5x47L is a dandy deer rifle and works well in a bench gun also. I have found it to be very accurate.

My hunting rifle load is a 120gr nosler at 2940 out of a 23" barrel. I've chrono'd a few loads that went over 3k but this one shoots bugholes from an 8.5# rifle.

I've killed 20ish deer with it and being my "serious" deer rifle, several of them larger (at least for here) body deer. None have taken a step yet.

300 savage against a 6.5x47l for comparison. Just remember that most of the extra capacity (from more forward shoulders) is taken up by the bullet.

Like 2mg said, it or the 260 is a wash. Pick one and go with it. Either is going to duplicate what a 6.5/300S would do.

Aw man, my wish pile keeps gettin bigger and I don't seem to be crossing much off of it these days......Thanks for the pics, that 6.5x47s really got me thinkin now.

My vote goes for the 6.5x47 too.

Better fit in a 700 S/A box.(depending on throat, of course)

I find it a little behind the 260 in velocity, but makes up for it in accuracy:

Al, everyone knows you can't shoot groups like that with a small frame rifle like that. Plus a dimunitive case like that will never work in the woods.

I mean...

Yes on the stocks.

I believe Al's is on a Rem 700, mine is a Stiller Predator. To be honest, for a hunting rifle you'll be just as well with a 700 rebuild.

Yeah I've got a remington long action and a short action just takin up space. I'd almost prefer to hack up the long action because it's just an old planin jane 30/06. A 6.5/06 would be pretty sweet, but as I get more into reloading and shoot more a 40 dollar pound of powder doesn't go all that far in my 35 whelen or my '06 as I'd like, and I don't want to sound like a wuss but anyone that says they like gettin kicked more than they need is a fool. A small 6.5 would flatten anything I'll ever be shootin at, further than I can shoot!

Yup, my 6.5's on a 700, my 6x47 on a Bat. I agree too, no flys on the 700. I've done a bunch that shoot great with no work done to the actions. Good barrel, good smith equals good shooter. Doesn't turn the steerer into a world class driver, but it's a start....

Sad thing though, I hunted Mt for 9 days, and Wi for 5 more, and the 6.5 is still a virgin. Plus I sold the stock, and now waiting on an Edge that's two months out yet, so it'll remain bloodless......

Just a stainless 700, #3 Brux 8 twist cut to 23", McMillan Classic, Leupold Mark IV 4.5-14 in Talleys.

It's getting a make-over already, and I just put it together.....

If more people would realize this & understand more powder is not always better. The would would have much better riflemen. I can't count how many times I have seen people "scared" of their gun... And yes, the 6.5x47 is more than any whitetail can bare, to any sane distance.

Yep. I've killed some bigger deer with the rifle but that's the best "Trophy" (so far at least).
