Does anybody shoot a 6.5 jdj in a contender carbine??? I had a 6.5 tcu rechambered this summer and I am very impressed with this set-up. I killed 2 deer this past weekend and both of them dropped in their tracks. The first one was a 8-point at 125 yds and the 2nd was a doe at 330 yds. I was shooting 120 grain balistic tips and got pass thrus on both. The gun is a G2 with a 24" barrell. Has anybody had any experience with 100 grain bullets in this caliber???? I think this would be an ultimate kids gun.

Don't have one but I think it would be just about perfect for a Contender carbine setup. Just curious how it would compare to a 6.5 x 55 rifle. Do you have any data from your loads ? Who did the rechamber ?

Southark- I have a 309 jdj-love the hell out of it!
SKB- google ssk industries- they can build just about any cal you want that the TC can handle pressure wise and I'm talking /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif HAND CANNONS!!!!!

vh - Yea I 've talked to JD before with less than stellar results. Apparently he has the attitude that he (and only he) has all rights to any similar configuration of that chambering. I would prefer to go around them for the same basic round. I really like the concept of the 6.5.

I have a Contender in 6.5 JDJ w/ a SSK Shillen 14" barrel.
The 120 gr BT is a great bullet for most anything you would want to hunt. Excellent accuracy, avg velocity is 2424 fps.

Thanks guys....SSK did the rechamber (I bought the 6.5 tcu to use as a deer/coyote rifle and before I ever shot it I called SSK and they rechambered it for $75 plus dies...It is a TC custom shop barrel that I got from Ed's Contenders...I have way less in it than a SSK barrel and it will shoot under an inch at a 100yds with almost everything that I havs shot in it. The 2 deer I killed last weekend dropped in their tracks... I have some 100 sierra hps loaded and since I only have one buck tag left I think I will go after a coyote this weekend.... I am thinking hard about a 309 JDJ for next year... are the cases hard to form (the 6.5s can't get much easier).... This little G2 is my go to deer gun this year....Robbie

SKB- I can't remember the charge but I was using RE15 powder at 2400fps (out of a pistol barrel this should be faster ) the barrel I am using is 24" ...I think it should be close to a 6.5x55.... I know that it is effective at 330 yds.... I hunt a powerline and I don't feel undergunned anymore while setting on a stand.

jd338...that is a nice pistol setup... I hunted one year with at contender pistol in 30/30AI and the only thing that I got to kill with it was a coyote at 165 yards... first one that I ever called up.....I don't have the time to practice enough to hunt with one this year....
