6.5 SLR anyone?

I have a 243win AI I've been thinking about rebarreling to 7-08, but then considered doing a 260 instead, at which point I thought, why not try something different?

So what have you? Good brass available (.260 & .243 Lapua), long neck, fits 140+ pills in a mag box (AICS mags), and of course, not being a 6.5creed, but matching its performance will rile up the 6.5creed guys. Other than being pricey for dies and being a handload only proposition, am I missing something?

Of course, I can always go 6.5creed, I have one in an RPR, but kinda looking for something different, for absolutely no reason. But I haven't seen a lot on the cartridge, so I'm shaking trees to see if I'm overlooking some critical pitfall?

Hmm interesting, I've never really looked at this cartridge until I read the post. It sounds basically like a 260 with a 30 degree shoulder and longer neck.

My 6.5 is going to be a Creedmoor because of the availability of ammo and reloading supplies compared to the other 6.5's. but if you're really looking for a wildcat and reload everything the SLR sounds decent.

Whats the SLR advantage over 260 ??

It's kinda like getting the benefits of going to a 260AI, but without the velocity and meant for longer/heavier bullets, and doesn't require fireforming.

In practice...

The 30degree shoulders will offer less case growth, and will give a little more case neck on the bullet to seat to mag length. The longer necks & steeper shoulders give longer throat life.

Compared to the 6.5 Creed, the case is a little bigger, which lets it run a touch lower pressure for the same MV, or run a touch faster MV at the same MAP. The improved shoulder puts it JUST behind the 260 for case capacity, so the MV's I'm seeing for similar barrel lengths about match the 260 - ahead of the Creed.

In theory...

The steeper shoulder angle produces a more uniform powder column for lower ES.

(And of course, I'll admit, I keep coming back to a 6XC or 6.5x47L too, but would prefer the extra bullet weight and BC's over the XC, and wouldn't mind the extra horsepower over the x47).

30 degree shoulder for better efficiency compared to the 260 and the longer case neck allows better seating of the longer, heavier bullets.

Edit: posted at the same time as above haha.

First I have heard of this one too. Sounds like a step up from creedmoor and x47L.

The only advantage I really see over the AI is that there is no fire forming. I'm not sure what the longer neck is really going to give over all. My 260AI does great with longer bullets, all I've ever shot are 140s.

One downfall I see over the 260AI is that you wouldn't be able to chamber factory 260 ammo if you were in a pinch and that was all that you could get, 260AI shoots standard 260 just fine.

I would stick with my 260AI, you do have to fireform but the brass lasts so long it's worth it. And once fireformed that will basically be the last time you have to do any case prep on them. I've never needed to trim, I haven't even full length sized the brass and it's at 8 or 9 reloads.
