Anybody out there running Reloader 17 in their 6.5 x 284's . If so I would like to hear what you think of it + and -'s .And if you care to share your loads. I have been shooting H 4350 and would like to try a few extra powders with Reloader 17 being 1. My choice of bullets have been the Sierra 142 grainers.

Thanks for your input,

Jim

Dont have one but I try to keep up. Your H-4350 is real close to burn rate with the RL-17, But in the same range the Reloader will give as much as 100fps more than H-4350. Accuracy is real good as well. Try it and post back your own findings. You might try the Berger 140gr vld as well.

I shot with a guy a few times that had one and he was running H4831sc. Hit 300yrd groups were impressive to say the least. He was trying to match the HSM ammo on velocity cause he had a scope fromthem

I tried it in my Savage Predator Max-1 with a 24 inch tube with 140 VLD's. Ran within 10 fps of H4831SC at max pressure. I'll stick with the H4831SC rather than put up with the temp sensitivity of the Reloader offering. I have been told by folks who should know that with barrels of 28-30 inches the R17 will spank H4831 and H4350, but I have no first hand experience.

I am about to start loading for a new 6.5-284 shooting 140gr. Amax.
I am starting with h4831sc but have also heard good things about R22

I have tried Reloder 17 in my 6.5x284. Here are the results.

26" Barrel

139 grain Lapua Scenar
Lapua Brass
Federal GM210M primer

48.0 grains
Avg velocity(AV): 2868
ES: 82.00
SD: 36.81
Group avg(GA): .979"

48.5 grains
AV:2923
ES:88.0
SD:36.55
GA:.987"

49.0 grains
AV:2939
ES:67
SD:24.21
GA:.740"

49.5 grains
AV:2977
ES:139
SD:58.76
GA:1.978" (hurl)

50.0 grains
AV:2997
ES:76.0
SD:30.22
GA:.603"

General observations:
Although faster than H4831SC, the 17 is not nearly as accurate and has a much higher ES across the board. I also noted that the 17 provides much more blast and recoil, as well as heats the barrel up VERY quickly. I cant help but think it will burn the throat out quicker than H4831SC.

Hope that helps.

I have also found Re17 to yield high ES and SD in .243 Winchester (with 65- to 75-grain bullets) and .220 Swift (with 50-grain V-Max). Have not tried it in other cartridges.

I have had better luck with IMR 4831 and RL 22 than 4350. I am shooting a custom 6.5-284 and a Savage LRH both shooting 140G bullets/Lapua & Norma brass for each at .010 off.

204farr, that is truly impressive. Do you have any idea what your velocity variations are like? I have always thought Re17 is very impressive on paper and ought to yield outstanding results, but as I mentioned above my results have been disappointing. Maybe it's just not going to work well in .220 and .243, I dunno. I'm open to ideas on how to make it fly right, though.
