6.5 x 284 questions

Rowney,
Rocky Gibbs is credited with the developement of the gibbs line, its all based on the 270 or 06 case, upon fireforming the shoulder is pushed forward (giving the case 8+ grains powder capacity) the body taper goes to almost nothing(helps keep the case from developing pressure sign, IE less bolt thrust) I read the work of darrel cassel of 1000 yd shooting fame, and ray romains, who has built around 50 gibbs rifles, this is where my info came from. anybody want more inf PM me.
My apologies to cruisin for hi-jacking his thread, things got a little out of hand.

Oh I don't care...

I am after a round for big game and long range target shooting so that is why I am looking at the 6.5 x 284. This 264 WM looks apealing as well. How does it compare with the 6.5 x 284.

Is brass, dies and bullet selection about the same with these two?

well the bullets are the same, you should be able to get really good brass, dies wouldn't be a problem, some would say the belted case wouldn't be condusive to accuracy but you set your dies right and headspace on the sholder, it wouldn't be an issue, I've never had a problem with belted case accuracy.
You may hear thats its overbore and hard on barrels, and when introduced probably was, but advances in new powders and better barrels has helped that problem immensely. You can load the 264 down and still outperform the 6.5/284 and experience good barrel life, not saying you'll get better accuracy from it, the 284 is a wonderful platform to work off of.
Or you could compromise with a 6.5 WSM, another very efficient case by design.

prolly not quite that in the 264, I'd say 1200, possibly 1500 in the 6.5/284. alot depends on how hot you load it, the powder you shoot, how hot you get the barrel while shooting, just to many variables to give you an exact number.

Ridge Runner, I've looked at the 6.5 Gibbs also and from reloading data that I've found it shouldn't give up very much to the 264 mag using 100gr bullets and with the 140gr it's about the same.
Alot don't realize the gibbs is the same oal case as the 264 mag. Case body lenght on the 6.5 gibbs is
2.145 across the shoulder is .453 and the 264 mag body lenght is 2.256 across the shoulder .491, so just might be acouple grs difference. Get alittle extra barrel and twisted should make up that difference that the 264 mag would have. I may order my barrel next week. I'm shooting a 6.5x284 with a 28" barrel. Well good luck.

The long range across-the-course shooters who shoot a 6.5mm almost unanimously shoot the 6.5-284. It is extremely rare to see any other 6.5mm chamber in the top 25 finishers. Plenty of 6mm Tubb chambers in the top 25 though.

Both chambers have been getting at least 1000 rounds barrel life and sometimes as much as 12-1300 rounds. True they are not quite as fast as the same calibers with larger cases, but you pay a lot of barrel life for a little more velocity.
