i was thinking about my next purchase. i am getting a 12bvss in 22-250. i am going to set this rifle up for long range prairie dog shooting with a switch barrel. can i use the savage short action for the 6.5x284? or is that a long action cartridge? and will the bolt head be the same? and yes i know that a 284 will be a barrel burner. i want to use the 284 for some yote sniping. thanks lee

Lee the 284 is a short action case designed to feed thru actions designed for the 308. It should work fine thru any short action. It's also not that much of a barrel burner, I think you might like it. You can buy brass for it also.

IDBob, I would take a little exception to 6.5x284 working in short actions. It should be just fine in a Savage short action, but when you get a long throat and a long bullet they really fill up a Remington short action. Mine in a 700 SA will not allow the heavier bullets to be magazine fed even though the magazine was modified when it was built to get the most room possible.

The bolt face should not be a problem.

If you don't consider 1000 shot's average per barrel life not a burner, what is? And yes I own and shoot a 6.5-284.

The 6-284 is only good for about half that.

Wow, let me stand in line to have that one made for me. After a break in you may have 80% barrel life, and then there is the fine tuning.

If you start out with a 32" tube and keep cutting off both ends every 650 rounds or so, they can last a while. lol......

I think you have two types of barrel life with the 6.5x284. You have the 1000yd match rifle here is something I copied from another site, "Barrel life is a key issue for 6.5-284 shooters, because barrels can loose their accuracy edge in as little as 800 rounds, though 1000 rounds is more typical. But don't throw away that barrel merely because the groups start opening up. Sometimes some aggressive throat polishing can restore much of the accuracy, and you can get hundreds more rounds of useful life by having the barrel set back.John Hoover reports: "I've had many barrels set back 1". Nearly always they shoot as well or better than before."

I think a match 6.5x284 might be loaded alittle more aggresive that I would load for my 6.5x284 so if your only shooting 100/200 rds a years as a LR yoter/antelope rifle you my get better barrel life. My 6.5x284 was build on a long action.

Well good luck

In all honesty, I have always had to cut an inch off the chamber end AND an inch off the muzzle end of my 1000yd light gun. The muzzle end will tend to "fish eye". I could begin to tell things were going down hill after about 600-700 rounds.
