6.8 and other applications

There is much discussion of the 6.8 in the AR rifles and it got me wondering if anyone is using the round in other types of firearms. It seems like a great candidate for a youth bolt gun for whitetails out to about 200 yds. How about a 130 grain bullet at about 2450 to 2500 fps? Low recoil and should be effective out to 200.

I though the whole idea of this round was stemming from the US military wanting a better performing cartridge at 600 yard, than the .223?

Remington's SPS is available in the 6.8 now, or so they claim. I think it was designed to have more power in a street fight, not for longer range use, but I might be wrong about that.

Asher,

I do not know what a remington SPS rifle is but I have seen a remington rifle chambered in the 6.8 caliber. I think it was a mountain rifle I remember correctly. Seemed like a good rifle, not sure of the caliber's effectiveness though.

The 270Weak, it was an attempt to put the 5.56 round to bed.
Many other calibers are available that put the 6.8 in the back seat when it comes to predators.

The 6.8 only beats out the .223 if you compair it to 55/62gr FMJ rounds. When the 77gr Sierras are used the 6.8 can stay at home!

The Army doesn't use 77 Sierras, as far as I know!
The 6.8 was designed to give more thump from bayonet distance out to 400 meters or so, which is what the M4 carbines are used for (and mostly within the closer half of that).

If you want longer reach from an AR try the 6.5 Grendel.
I have read that the 6.8 does fine on deer with the right bullet, at moderate ranges. It would make a nice youth gun in something like a Remington Model 7.

I put a 6.8 AR together for a friend, I was not impressed at all. The military is using a 77grain or so bullet and, last I heard, they can't keep enough of it on hand. I agree with SteveM, the 6.8 can stay home when the 77's are out there doing a great job.

Before I would get the 6.8 I would do the 6.5 Grendel, but another option for deer and predator hunting is the 300 Fireball. You can use 150-165 grain bullets with ease and push them around 2000-2200 fps or so, makes a great short range deer gun. The 110 grain or 125 grain bullets work very well on predators too, with very little recoil. The AR feeds them reliably and cases are super easy to form and load by using 223 brass and a full length sizing die. It gives you 7.62x39 performance with much better bullet selection.
