6 BR load for coyotes?

I just received my rifle from LRI last week, and was hoping someone had a good bullet and load would be for this cartridge.

It is a trued Rem 700 with a Brux 1-8 twist barrel. And it is a repeater with the "Bryant magazine mod" I did to it. I probably won't shoot past 600 yards with it. Most likely under 400.

I have used most of the bullets you can get in 6mm and the sierra 70gr blitz king is far and away the best performer for me in my 6xc. Have shot several coyotes with it and no exit holes.

Your shooting my old Sako right? Well used to be mine.

70 gr Speer TNT in my BR does quite well on paper. Not a coyote load per se as it is an 18# rifle. But it should work well on the intended prairie dog targets. I am using IMR 8208 XBR.

I can't speak about 600 yard shots at coyotes since I don't shoot that far with my 6Br. At called in distance the 55 grain ballistic tip works very well.

what powder and are you loading hot

Since you have an 8 twist barrel, you ought to think a bit heavier than 70 grains. Berger 88s or 90 grainers would do fine, with H4895, Varget or R15 behind.

I have seen TNTs and Blitz bullets come apart with fast twist barrels when pushed hard. Don't know if a BR would do it or not.

Question, how much freebore do you have? About .105-.130 Freebore is normal for a 8T, 105g bullet. This may limit your accuracy with lighter bullets.

So, do your homework on the amount of freebore you have, see which bullet will touch the lands and still be in the case neck, rock on!

It is not unusual these days to put the fastest twist per caliber on a custom barrel, then the gunsmith throats or uses a reamer for the longest bullet possible for that fast twist. Then when a guy wants to use shorter bullets he is jumping the bullet a country mile and then he wonders why he is not shooting bug holes with his rifle.

The gunsmith may have used a zero freebore reamer, one with .055, .090, .105, or .130. Just check your freebore with an ogive gauge and choose your bullet accordingly. Often new barrels will jump bullets and still be accurate(what ever accurate means to you).

One main issue is to use a bullet that is meant to expand at lower velocities, and the 87g V max may be an excellent choice for a long throat fast twist...lots of good choices, but If you can keep your bullet jump to .020 or less, you will hit pay dirt when it comes to accuracy.

Let us know how you come out!

34g of 748 pushing a 55g BT not hot. Nosler manual lists 36g as max.

.040 or .045" according to LRI's website.

The 6BR is very forgiving with freebore. There is a lot of neck to use. Until you get into the 105-107 VLDs you can use what you have well, although shorties probably won't reach the lands. My reamer is a .030" and I can seat 88s without the base getting below the neck, but since I use a 10 twist for those bullets I throat them deeper.

Go with the 80-90 grainers for now, the throat will erode where you can use longer bullets.
