6 mm Rem to 6.5x57???

Would be a lot easier to size 7X57, the neck would slightly thicker, could be a good thing depending on the neck size in the chamber.
 
Dan are you saying it is easier to neck it down than to neck it up? They are all the same case, just different sized bullets in them. I would think the 6m/m brass is easier to find than the 7x57
 
I think it's easier to neck a case down .020" in a sizing die than it is to use an expander ball to open one up .020+". Necking down the case, the neck is always straight with the body, running an expander in the neck always opens the thin side more than the thick side of the neck making it crooked. I use a tapered expander to open up 220 Russian to make 6PPC brass, otherwise you can crush some of the brass necks trying to use a ball expander, the kind you find in a RCBS die set. Neither 6MM Rem or 7x57 or 8x57 are easy to find.
 
I've been playing around with wildcats based on the 204 Ruger case and sizing them up as far as .25 and have had great luck. I've done about 400 cases up to .25 and haven't lost more than 3/hundred. I use a little Motor Medic on a "Q" tip swab and apply to the inside of the mouth and run them over a taperred expander, .20 to .25 in one pass. I tried doing it in steps but had better luck in just one pass. I do 204's to .22 and .24 also the same way.

I have been stockpiling 6mm Rem. Winchester brass for an
upcoming PD hunt, and I haven't had any problem finding it.
It isn't cheap, but it is available.

There is no shortage of this brass. It's just not in every corner gunshop in the country, like say 308 Win.

Also about using 6mm to make 6.5x57. 6mm brass has about a 26 degree shoulder and the "57" brass has about a 20 degree.
 
The 6.5x57 has a longer body and a shorter neck than 6mm Rem, not just a larger neck diameter. I think just a necked-up 6mm would have excessive headspace.

Starting with 7x57, you might be able to leave a short 7mm neck to headspace against for fireforming.

I should have mentioned that there are 2 different 6.5x57 cartridges.

One is the standardized European cartridge, which I think is the drawing from Steve's Pages.

The other is the US wildcat, popularized in the 1940's-50's as a rechambering for 6.5 Japanese rifles. It was usually described as the 257 Roberts necked up to 6.5 caliber.

If the rifle was chambered in Europe, it is most likely the CIP standard 6.5x57.

It the rifle is US origin, I think it would have more of a chance of being the US wildcat.
