I was thumbibg through my new berretta catalog and in he calibers offered section they mention 6 PPC USA and 22 PPC USA, It was with the 22-250, 223 ect group so I am assuming they are a varmint type caliber? FIll me In!

They are short, stuby cartridges, designed by Dr. Lou Palmissano and Ferris Pindell, a benchrest gunsmith, thus the designation PPC (Palmissano Pindell Cartridge). They derive from an old Russian case, and are about 30 years old or so. They, especially the 6PPC, are the mainstays of current benchrest shooters. Both are inherently accurate and seem to surpass everything else in terms of accuracy. They make fantastic varmint cartridges as well. Somedy I'd like to get a Cooper rifle chambered in 6PPC. Sako and a couple others chamber for it. Best wishes.

are these cartridges readily available or do you have to strickley handload them? Im thinking about getting a new varmint rifle and I want to explore my options

I just bought lapua cases for $49.75 a hundred!
This is a very accurate cartridge.
But I like the 6 BR more because it goes 200-300 fps faster.

where'd ya find them gunslinger? my 6ppc semi slings cases everywhere, don't find most of them. But the lil gum makes a phenomenal calling rifle.

You might be better off to go with 6BR or 22BR. Lapua an Remington make 6BR cases. To form the 22BR, simply run the 6BR into a 22BR FL die. The cartridge has a little more case capacity than PPC cases and are just as accurate.

Just my 2 cents.

I shoot a Ruger MK77Vt in 22PPC and love it! This is, like posted above, a handload only proposition. I would recommend a .223 or 22-250 for a starter gun and it will probably last you a lifetime of hunting. Lots of good factory ammo and cheap to shoot. Just my two cents...lots of opinions on this one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Nikonut

Hey Jack,
Sako makes both rounds but none to be had in the US!! These guys are about as dumb as the Rem ones! Got guns but no factory ammo for them.

I suspect there is great liability fear over the tight neck chambers. The US civil judicial system has become a lottery.

The best gunshop here in town has been a Remington warranty repair shop for probably 40 years. They recently gave it up because the 1.5 million liability policy they carry, is not enough for Remington.

Sorry state of affairs!

Jack,

Your right about Sako ammo, Norma made it too but stopped. I have some 6PPC Sako brass I necked down to 22PPC and have reloaded it at least 20-30 times and it's still better than the "new" Norma brass I've used. Lapua is about the best brass going for PPC now. Sure wish someone would start making good PPC brass, $50-70 per 100 is killing me! (and a few coyotes too, ha ha) Nikonut
