So I have made up my mind that I want to build (myself) a 6x45.
Thinking of going savage or remage. Custom 20 or 22 inch barrel
sporter profile and stocked in wood. Thinking 10 twist to run 60 gr up to 90 gr. Please tell me what you like or dislike and any and all recommendations are appreciated. I am looking to build this as a duel purpose rifle (varmints & deer) and scoped I would like to keep it under 7 1/2 pounds. Thanks Gary

I just got done with mine earlier this year. Obviously built for different reasons, but is one of my favorites. I run 105gr Amax in mine, but am already thinking up another 20" to run 87gr Vmax's. What this cartridge does on 24gr of powder is impressive. For what your intended purpose, I think a Bart 2B or #3 Brux would fit nicely. Personally, I would put it in a McM Hunter, but the wood is a nice touch as well. I run the Amax around 2700 FPS and think an 87 gr Vmax would impress.

I have built at least 9 6x45s on Savage actions & Ar15s.
I found the 1/9" tw works much better than he 1/10" with all bullets.
My personal one has a 20" bbl, due to the fact I understand them suppressed.
22" would be about perfect if you don't run a suppressor, that's one I built for my son.
I use heavy Sporter bbls since we use them for pdogs also.

I defintely agree with the 9 twist idea. I have built them with anything from an 8 twist to a 14 twist and there is no reason not to go with the faster twist. My current 9 twist shoots 68gr BR bullets very well.

9 twist sounds good to me. This is the real world info that I am looking for. Thanks! I was planning on finding a good used donor savage, What models do you recommend? Model 10 11 16 ? I have heard that the choice of wood stocks for an axis is limited.

Can't think of a better platform than the CZ527. If you bought a 223 you'd already have some decent wood, a great trigger, and a detachable mag.

If you were shooting bigger bullets then you'd need more magazine, but you can load 2.300" without issue in the CZ, which is plenty.

I just built a 6x45 on a stevens 200 s/a AKA savage 10 s/a. Bought my action for $200 took the 223 barrel off and had jim from apache gun works chamber me a 9 twist 22" green mountain medium sporter barrel. So far with nosler 55 gr varmageddon bullets I got under a 1/2" group with 27gr of BLC-2. Jim does great work and his barrels shoot awesome for the price. BTW I paid $190 for my barrel. Dont see the point in spending $300 for a hunting barrel that will do the same job as my cheaper priced GM barrel. Its all about proper throating of the cartridge and crowning the muzzle concentric with the bore. Barrel name doesnt mean its a better barrel

2.300 isnt near enough in my opinion to shoot anything but the lighter varmint bullets in a 6x45.

You might look at Western/Accurate for some data that is heavier than varmint weight. I just shot up to 87's in two 6X45's today loaded to 2.30. One was a bolt and the other an AR.

105 Amax @ 2700fps from a 20" barrel seems a bit "HOT" to me.

So I have found a used stevens 200 for a good price. Is this a good receiver to use as a donor action? What might my stock options be?

I went the CZ route about 12 years ago. Used a 1-12 Douglas barrel at 22 inches. Had a Gunsmith do it named Jack Belk, He did a fantastic job. I planned on shooting the lighter bullets anyways. It is one of the most accurate rifles I have. I like the 58 VMAX for coyotes and bobcats, but the 55 NBT works fine too.

My biggest cat to date, 27#'s

What charge and velocity do run them at?

Finding a pre-fit chambered barrel 1n 6x45 for a small shank savage is not looking so good. Shaw and pac-nor seem like the only options I can find.

My 6x45 is built on a Savage 10 with a Shaw 1-8 twist heavy barrel, with 70 grain Sierra hp and Benchmark powder it has less than 1/2 in vertical at 300 yards.I can't ask for any more than that.

Try Shilen, I used one on a savage build.

I have a 6x45 built on a AR platform with a 1/8 twist Shillen barrel. Shoots the 85gr Sierras. Great for big game. Just started using the Nosler 70g ballistic tip for prairie dogs. Only problem with the AR is I need to reload a lot more.

I have been in touch with jim at northland and he says criterion and shilen don.t chamber it in that caliber.
