60 grain .224 hornady bullets

I have read several threads where the 60 grain v-max is mentioned as a good choice for coyote.

I also see where hornady makes a 60 grain hp and a 60 grain soft point in .224, however they are not mentioned vary often.

So my question is.... besides the fact that the plastic tipped bullets are very popular, performance wise what is gained of lost if using the hp or the soft point instead of the v-max.

Same can be said and asked about the 87 grain offerings from Hornady in the 6mm offereings.

Thanks.

Thanks.

They all work very well and are all very close in B.C and S.D numbers. Pretty much pick your poison on the three. The plastic tips just look like they will go faster. Kinda like the fully blown Hemi! In reality though they all perform very well and very close to one another.

60gr V-Max

B.C = .265

SD = .171

60gr SP

B.C = .264

SD = .171

60gr HP

B.C = .271

SD = .171

I use the 60gr sp and they will flat out drop coyotes, ive never had a spinner if you shoot them in the neck or shoulder its just 1 small hole. If you shoot for the lungs it will open them up like a can opener.

The 60 grn sp is my rifle's favorite. On fur, it always leaves two small holes.

It does well on antelope and deer also.

The 60 grn soft point has been my go to round for coyotes and my Savage. I never have had a "blowup" with the soft point. it is a great bullet for coyotes. I have swung back to the V-Max because that is what will shoot out of my finicky Mini 14.

I just picked up 100 60 grn SP because it was all my LGS had on the shelves. Hopefully I will have some results to post this weekend.
