6arc bolt… or 22arc / 20Practical ?

I won a custom bolt action rifle in a coyote contest and I’ve all but settled on the 6arc. I’ve had a handful of guys tell me if they push a 58gr Vmax around 3500FPS, they don’t get exits, but it flattens coyotes with authority. I also like it because it’s designed to be efficient in shorter barrels. Does anyone else have feedback on a dedicated 6arc bolt action?

My other options would be 22 arc, but I’m having a harder time finding information since it’s relatively new still. And lastly would be a 20 Practical.

Max distance I shoot is around 300 yards with a large majority between 80 and 150

So, guys with more experience than me are sure to chime in also, but i think the 58 gr vmax in a 6 arc might end up being a less than optimal combo. The twist rates for the 6 arc are generally 1:7.5-1:8, and it's intended to shoot longer, higher bc bullets. Hence hornady bringing out the eld-vt line of bullets (80 gr for 6mm). I would expect quite a bit of jump to the lands with a 58 gr vmax. Not trying to say its not shootable, or even wont be accurate, but probably more efficient combos available. Good luck whichever direction you go tho! And congrats on winning a custom rifle! Thats awesome!

Valid concern, i don’t think that would be an issue in my specific case though since I’ll have the barrel reemer to whatever is necessary. That would solve the issue right?

6 arc. It covers the gamut of game and the 6mm bore lets you shoot the 55-75’s a little faster. I have a 6.5 Grendel in a 22” bolt that will prolly grow up to be a 6 arc. But it shoots really well stock. I pulled one bad in this group, but it was pushing 107’s at 2700 on my Garmin.

It will be fine. It’s not optimal twist rate but my 6 arc gas guns haven’t had any issues with the full range of 6 mm weights. My 16” AR 1-8 twist arc shoots 75 g vmax at 3k with sub inch accuracy. It shoots 58’s @ 3200+ with 29 grains of IMR 3031.

I shoot both the 6mm ARC and 20P, plus I shoot pretty much a 22 ARC equivalent a 22-204.

If you think fur will be valuable again or want a varmint rifle the 20P or 22 ARC. For just killing stuff the 6mm ARC.

If this is a custom rifle and you can choose cartridges, could you get a slow twist or specify freebore.

I shoot a flat base 75gr HP out of my 6mm ARC (factory Mini Howa) and have no trouble hitting the lands with plenty of bullet in the case.

Congratulations on your win

Good feedback. It’s not necessarily that I foresee a fur market coming back, I just don’t see a reason to make a big mess out of them. And, if I shoot a uniquely colored one, I will finish it and sell it in the private market for a nice money, or keep it myself

Sounds like a good choice. I use 40gr NBTs in the heavy rifle and 32 Nosler HPs, sadly discontinued, seems old school flatbase is out out of style, luckily I bought a bunch. The 32s I shoot in the little carbine. 39gr Speers in the AR, rarely take it out, I won the AR.

First post but you gotta start somewhere. I shoot a 20P gas gun for coyotes and PD. 22” semi bull BHW barrel. I built it for a PD trip but really planned on using for yotes. I originally loaded 40 grain hornady vmax and shot several coyotes with that combo. Then I got some 34 or 35 grain dogtown bullets from midway. I ended up taking several coyotes past 300yds with that one. I’ve also tried 32 gr hornady vmax. But recently my hunting partner really wanted to try some 39 gr bergers. He was shooting a 22-250 but was so impressed with my 20P that he had a custom carbon fiber barrel on a remington 700 action built. All that said, I am in the process of load development for a 6x6.8 that I built, which is nearly the same as the 6 arc. If I remember correctly I have gotten 3500+ with 58gr hornady according to my garmin. May be hot, but I stopped while I was waiting for my suppressor to show up before continuing with that project. This winter hopefully I’ll get to try it out on coyotes.

I've shot a few coyotes with my 20 practical. It's a fun rifle. I like that the 6 arc hits with more authority, but i like that the 20 practical is quieter, flatter, less recoil, and less chance of pass through if I'm hunting near farm animals or structures. I've run a mix of 32, 34, and 40 grain bullets. They all work. Mine is a 26" heavy barrel 1:10 twist threaded and suppressed on a savage receiver with MDT ORYX chassis.

Is there a timeline to get this rifle built ? I seen you had asked about 17s, 20 s ,22 creed/Arc, 6mms...

You may be over thinking this .

I guarantee I’m overthinking it. But, I’ll never have a chance at a free rifle again, so I’ll take my time
IIRC, you mentioned this will be built from a Rem 700 action ? If so does the builder have a way to make the ARCs work in such action ? I don't have any experience with the ARC ,but believe it's not a standard bolt face , like a 223 or 243 ?

I've have /had factory , semi-custom, full custom rifles . Shot coyotes with 17 rem, 17-204, 223, 223ai, 6x47L, 300wsm and probably a few others I don't recall. Only taking the prefect shot vs taking any shot a coyote offers makes a big differance on which caliber / chambering to use.
With the proper bullet choice most will be good on fur.

6 arc you would need to bore a 223 up the sako
Or bore and bush silver solder down a 308 sizer or a wsm size.with sako

Works grate or cost is about $125.00 bucks in the laber plus the parts

We do the bore and sako from 223 size for about $180

We do the 308 or wsm for about $240 bore silver solder in hand made bushing then the sako .extra cost for bushing and solder and reborn bolt face
