6BR from AR Performance

Does anyone here have any experience with the 6mmBR? How about this cartridge in an AR? I have been reading a little about it on 68forums. Check out the vendor area for ARperformance.

It sounds like about the closest thing to a 243 you can get in a small frame AR. Sounds like 3500FPS with a 55gr bullet is a reasonable expectation.

I had a DPMS LR243 and loved everything about it except it was a tank. You can only lighten those things so much. This sounds like a great option and I think I might take the plunge. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it. Thanks. He also has a new 270ar he is developing that sounds like it would be a hot setup too.

I don't know anything about those cartridges, and have no real life experience with either.

BUT, I have done the math, and a 6.8 measures out approximately to .277 which is a 270.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I looked at the 6mmBR awhile back. I don't remember exactly but does it require a longer barrel to get that sort of performance? Something to consider as it would add weight. I have a 243 and it weighs 9lbs loaded and I wonder what an ar with 22" barrel weighs.

I have shot a 6BR extensively. Not in AR's but in several bolt rifles from 20" 8# sporter to a 28" 21# F-class rig. I could go on & on about what it does & what it's capable of; but instead I'll just sum it up to being one of (if not) the best cartridges out there.

Not sure about the AR platform in the link, but you will NOT be disappointed in the cartridge preformance!!!

I spoke to the owner of ar performance. he made it sound like I could get that kind of velocity out of an 18" barrel. I am going to learn more. it is supposed to be a super easy cartridge to reload for. no fire forming. Factory brass availability. No modified uppers. Only thing is the magazines. he said 6.8 mags from PRI are the best.

H is a great guy to work with. If you get that sort of performance from a lightweight rig that could be the cat's meow. Keep us posted.

The 6br is a great cartridge & yes it's only 100-200fps behind the 243win. However, no matter what cartridge; the longer barrel will give you more velocity (ie a 28" 6br loaded hot will be faster than an 18" hot 243). A general rule of thumb is expect 25fps velocity gain every inch of barrel.

I've not shot a ton of light bullets (under 70gr) in my 6BR's but the velocities quoted from the site look a bit optomisic. I'm not running anything close to what he is claiming with my 20" 6BR with the 85-95gr class bullets. You can probobly get there but your going to trash the brass running it that hot. I usually get better accuracy away from scorching hot anyway. That's what I look for most & where the 6BR rules.

The owner, Harrison Beene or "H" as he is called, is a stand up guy. I can't say enough good things about him as a custom rifle maker or as a red blooded American. He has made countless wildcat rounds over the years and never seems to stop tinkering and pursuing excellence.

He has been working on that platform for a while. For reference I have two of his uppers -- one in 5.56 which is my go to calling rig and one in 6.8 aka The Hammer, which is for when I go to cat/bear country.

Here is an article I wrote after meeting him when he still lived in Colorado. Seems he got out of that state just in time!

I have a 6MMBR AR that was built by Dtech. It shoots great. I was mostly shooting it with 105VLD's at the 600 yd targets. But I did shoot some 55's in it for PD's once. I didn't like it for PD's because it kicked just enough to make me miss the hits. It is hard on the expensive Lapua brass. I never tried to shoot it as a repeater, even though it is possible with a mod to the bolt and if you have a mag. from BRAT rifles who specialize in 6BR for competion. Let me know if you want to talk about it and I will PM you my phone number. I quit shooting it because it was so hard on brass. I replaced it with a Custon Savage F class 6BR.

I finally got a shipping confirmation today. The Fedex man should be here this week. I have also compiled most of the components for rolling my own. I still need the actual bullets I will be shooting as well as neck bushings for my Hornady dies. It is always expensive to get things setup for a new caliber you don't have, especially one like this.

I am putting together a 223 upper for my dad at the same time and will post pics of it as well. It will have a Daniel Defense barrel. I am anxious to see how their CHF barrels shoot.

I Have a Noveske and a PRI handguard. I am not sure which one will go on which upper. I scored some BCG's from Joe Bobs. I got BCM Gunfighter charging handles for each one as well as YHM low pro gas blocks. My dad's rifle will have a Leupold 3.5-14x50 scope. It is an LPS model I don't think they make anymore. It is pretty nice with a 30mm tube and side focus though. It will be mounted in a PEPR mount. My upper will have a Trijicon 3-9x40 in a JP mount. The glass on this scope is unbelievable. The quality of the JP mount is exactly what you would expect. Perfect workmanship, flawless machining, and excellent fit and finish.

I am super pumped to put both of these rifles together. There will be many pics and reviews to come. Anyone have any Hornady 6mm neck bushings they want to unload? More to come!!!

I have been running a 6br on the encore platform for about 10 years. I have found it one of the easiest cases to load for. My barrel was made from a very inexpensive blank and it shoots extremely well. I get very good results from a 85 grain Sierra over Reloader 10x. Dont forget that the lapua brass takes the small rifle primer when you are getting your components together. You may also want to open up the flash holes a bit so your decapping pin wil be able to fit through. Sinclair Int. makes a tool for the job.
IMO you cant go wrong with an upper or rifle from Harrison.
Let us know how she shoots.

Fedex showed up yesterday with my barrel and bolt. They look very nice. Nice machine work and finish. There was a mix up and my barrel didn't get cut down to 18" before it was sent out for finish. I told H to not worry about it and go ahead and cut it off anyways. I might shoot some moly coat on it. Do I need to finish it? Will it rust? The barrel is Chromolly and the only thing missing is the finish on the end where he did the target crown. I will post up pics on Monday when I get back to my office. The bolt is really nice looking too. I also picked up some odds and ends for my reloading dies and some 58gr Vmax bullets. I will put together a load using 4198 and 58gr Vmax bullets. I still need some neck sizing bushings for Hornady. Anyone help a brother out?

Sorry to drag this out. It is killing me to not be able to put this thing together and start shooting it. I have a neck bushing on backorder until the middle of next month. Anyways here is a comparison of a regular bolt and the Super Bolt that comes with the barrel. Also a comparison of 223 brass next to 6BR brass. Lots of capacity.

Great question. I don't know the answer. It would be nice since it seems like some of the other brands are more common in neck bushings. I am not even sure how to find out.

Hornady dies can use theirs plus Redding and Wilson bushings.
