6mm-284

how do you form you brass do you take it from 284 trim and turn your necks if so do you have to use a step die of some sort or do you just buy the expensive 6.5-284 brass and go from there? The only barrel I could find in stock was a 1 in 10 so do you think it will still shoot the 105 a-maxs?

Buy the expensive brass - it is worth it.

With a 10" twist, it will not shoot the 105 A-Maxs.
9" is marginal, and 8" is preferred.

I agree with CatShooter, get the 6.5/284 brass. Get either the Hornady or Lapua brass, the Norma has a slightly larger diameter base and MAY cause some problems in some bolt faces? If you try to use 284 brass the necks get a little thick and you may have problems seating bullets without neck turning. With 6.5 brass all you need is an inexpensive form die.

I also think CatShooter is correct on the twist. I have a 12" twist and can not stabilize bullets over 85 grains.

A couple of other thoughts, if you do not have the action yet you are better off with a long actions so you can seat the bullets out farther.

I start with a 243 then rechambered for 243AI then later rechambered for a 6/284. With this experience I have found the 243AI was a better choice. The 6/284 is a lot harder to get a good accurate load developed while only give you a slight increase in velocity.

I can't put down the 6/284, but I thought that I would give you an eye full on the 243 AI which was my windy day rifle on dog towns.

I shot 27"-30" Hart barrels with a minimum spec SAAMI reamer with zero freebore. Using a Remington 7/08 case neck downed and neck turned, 48.5g of Win 760 with a 70g Bullet got from 3850-4030 depending on the barrel length and choice of a CCI-250 primer or a Win Mag primer. Accuracy in all barrels were between .250-.300 at 100 yards.

Fireforming load was 47.0-47.5g of Win 760 with the CCI-250 at 3700-3750 fps.

Accuracy with the 85's was great at 3550 (max velocity with accuracy), but with greater bearing surface, the copper fouling was exponentially increased; since long shot strings inbetween cleanings were the norm, the lighter faster bullets performed the best on 150 rounds shot strings.

I had a friend that shot a 6/284. I do believe that the 6/284 will deliver higher velocities with the heavier bullets.

I had a 25/284, but traded it off because the round is just too long for a short action. As soon as you start jumping your bullets very far, accuracy suffers (especially if you are shooting a VLD bullet that may love jamming the lands). The 6/284 is much better suited on a long action if you ever intend to use the magazine.

I will be building of a VZ24 Mauser action which I took in and had heat treated here locally so magazine length wont be an issue I thought alot about the AIs and even a 6mm-06 but I had already acquired a reamer and guages for the 6-284

well in that case why not do a 6mm-06, I don't think the 284 case is gonna give you significant jump over just a 6mm rem case

I guess you didn't read the part where he already has the reamer?

thanks for the info I really wanted a 1 in 9 twist but without waiting 3 months for one I had to go with the 1 in 10 I didnt think it would work on the 105s but I was hoping I was wrong.
