6mm AI from 30-06 brass

Ok so I had a lot of time off lately and the fields are to high to see any groundhogs unless there standing on there mounds and then you just see the tops of there heads, plus I need some more 6mm brass and there is none to be found and I had a bunch of unfired WW 06 brass stashed away.
I bought this set of wildcatters shoulder setback dies from pbike last year and thought I would give them a try.

It wasn't really all that bad and once the dies were set up it didn't take that long to crank out 50 cases, four pulls of the handle per case on the Rockchucker to move the shoulder back and neck down the brass,
then one trip through the 6AI body die in the CO/AX.
Rough cut the necks on my mini chopsaw then run a 6mm expand mandrel in them and trim to length then turn the necks and anneal then fireform (usually while groundhog hunting) I did a few with the COW but didn't care for it, the brass did form out nice though

Why heck yeah! You got it dont you? I was wanting to go to a 6mm AI instead of a .243 AI but lack of availiable brass stopped me. Looks like you got it figured out. Pretty sure that ought six brass will around for quite some time.

You done good.

I wanted some cheap brass for a Brazilian mauser i have a d made the 7x57 cases from fired .270 brass. RN them thru a trim die and cutt he excess off. Then finished them in a 7x 57 die and fire formed. Worked great.

I got to have that set!!!!

Thanks for sharing!

Back when I was a kid in the early 60's, I worked for a commercial ammo maker. I drove a school bus during the 10th,11th, and 12th grades. As soon as I got home, I headed over to Clyde's house to see what kind of work I would be doing from molding bullets for $10 per 1000, loading shot shells, pistol bullets, or forming and loading rifle ammo. Great way for a kid to grow up. All the WW II vets and Korean War vets gathered over to tale tall tales.

We formed everything you can think of from military once fired 06 brass.

Loaded ammo with Sierra bullets sold for $2.00 per 20 rounds!

We used RCBS form dies and a hack saw.

That little die set demonstrated by Rich44 is gold.

Tim thanks, I call it therapy, nothing better than sitting at the loading bench (for me anyway) except for sitting at the shooting bench

Cheap is good and 06 brass is usually available somewhere, I've actually been looking daily for some brass 6mm Rem hasn't been around for a while

Yes it is very handy I'm thinking about getting the .223 case set also.

The set comes with 5 bushings .393 .346 .301 .267 .248

Paul makes 2 sets one for 308/30-06 cases and one for 223 cases is how I understand it, the die body fits very close to the case so anything over the body diameter of a 308/223 case would not fit.
So if you want to form anything from 223/204 brass you get the 223 size, forming anything from 308/30-06 brass the 308.
I did have to add spacers under the threaded insert in the top of my Rockchucker to use this with 06 brass

So this is how you can make 35 remington cases from 308. You can make anything you want as long as the case diameter is no bigger than a 308 or 223. Smaller doesnt matter. Sorry that I have to ask but Paul who.

He has some very good videos on you tube on using his dies look up pbike257 shoulder setback dies

Unless it would crush/buckle the brass because of shoulder angle, why couldn't you have the last bushining cut out to 40 degrees for shoulder angle? Fireforming may still be necessary to straighten all the tapper (not sure if the die is inducing more than 30/06 is already); but it wouldn't be working the brass so much pushing to 26 then blowing back out to 40.

Just a thought...

Question for Rich44 or others! Would 308 brass work or is it too short? Wrong base? Just curious my son has my old 6mm. The question came up while discussing this subject.

To short the 6mm case is 2.233 the 308 is 2.015 they do share the same case head

I emailed the die maker that exact same question but have not heard back yet
