I think that the 257AI is a good companion to a lot of other cartridges.

sqrlgtr,

you could do a lot worse than building a 6mm Ackley Improved for light bullet usage on varmints!

I don't know why a 6mm-284 was mentioned so much, when I saw no mention that YOU were interested in it. And for the record, the 6mm Ackley Improved and the 6mm-284 are not even close, at least with the many rifles I have seen in both calibers...

If you are seriously wanting a 6mm A-I for a varmint cartridge, you have made a very fine choice! 55 gr. bullets will very easily exceed 4,000 fps. and 70 gr. bullets will be right on it's heels...

Lilja barrel / 3-groove / 1-13" twist / heavy varmint contour (minimum) / 26" - 28" length

If you get a barrel that has a 3" to 5" straight shank section at the chamber end, when accuracy goes to pot, you can cut off 2" of barrel, rechamber, cut an inch off the muzzle and recrown, and should get a minimum of a thousand more accurate rounds through that barrel before it becomes a tomato stake!

I am speaking from experience, as I have done this many times and find it do be very worthwhile...

Barrel life will depend more on how you take care of your barrel than anything else. Don't let it get scorching hot, and when you are done shooting for the day, right after the kast round has been fired, coat the bore with a 50/50 mix of Shooters Choice and Kroil. This will keep copper build up to an absolute minimum. Also, run a wet patch down the bore every 3 days, and keep the bore "wet" until you get ready to go shooting again, then dry it out good, just before you go shooting again. Also, NEVER use a brass brush when cleaning your bore. Always use nylon. With your barrel properly maintained, your first shot from a cold barrel should be dead on...

If you have a hankering for a 6mm Ackley Improved, then by all means, build one and enjoy it!

As far as brass is concerned, the parent case for the 6mm rem, and 257 rob is the 7x57. Norma and a lot of others manufacture brass for the old girl, so you shouldn't have any problem finding good varmint grade (minute of varmint, loose in the grass) brass. I say "GO FOR IT".

Really, "not even close", bit of a stretch there don't ya think??

My 6mm-284 does just over 3,900 fps. with Sierra's 85 gr. B.T.-H.P. Game King bullet, and I have never seen a 6mm Ackley Improved do that or even come close...

I have seen Sierra's 100 gr. B.T. Spitzer exceed 3,400 fps. and even 3,500 fps. with the 6mm-284 but I have never seen a 6mm A-I do that...

And let me guess, not a bit of pressure, right? lol

Oh I'd love to hear what those loads were, particularly the 3900fps w/85 grainers.

For liability reasons, I will not list the load. I will say though, that the barrel was a Lilja 3 groove with a 1-13" twist rate with a 32" barrel length. Powder used was one of the Vhit high energy powders. No, it did not show any pressure signs, but is was an extremely accurate load! I took 5 pronghorn antelope with that gun, and one of the Wyoming ranchers I was hunting with said he wanted it, so I gave it to him...

i gave a few of my land owning ranchers turkeys for christmas.

feel like a cheap sob now.

RWS brass is good brass. Maybe better than Lapua, some say. Available thru Huntingtons.
7X57 is easily necked down for the 6mm.

Been looking at northland shooter supply at a shilen barrel all ready chambered and ready to screw on.Have any of you guys ever dealt with them before?

Noticed the 6-284 has been mentioned a few times. No doubt a fine cartridge, just had my heart set on the 6mmAI.

Really more interested in a very flat trajectory out to 300/400yards
with a varmint type bullet. Not really interested in really long range shooting.

Should have a good supply of 6mm brass in a day are two per acklyman...

I have had a 6mmAI since the mid-80's. Would I do it again????
Yes, in a heart beat. Good brass is not that difficult to come by, especially considering neck down options.
