6mm Remington

I just got a 6mm Remington with a 10 twist barrel. I will have dies on Monday and I already have brass. As of right now I have a ton of reloading data in 4 different books and I am not sure were I am going to start. Anyone have any suggestions for a good bullet/powder combo for coyotes? Right now I am considering the 80 grain berger, and the 87 grain V-max. Not sure if I got the 87 grain right, but I know they make and 80 something grain 6mm V-max. What sierra bullet would be a good choice? Not sure what powder I will use but I do have Varget and H4350 on hand.
Thanks, Chris

I killed a slug of yotes with two different loads in my last custom 6mm Rem.

Win brass & Fed 210's in all loads

50.0g of Win 760 with the 60g Sierra=3950 fps

42.0g of IMR 4064 with the 80g Sierra Blitz BT=3500 fps

That 80g Blitz bullet is one of the very best coyote bullets on the market. You get the loudest WHOP with that bullet than any bullet that I have ever shot!

I was not very pleased with the 80g Berger...just so so.

Both of the above loads are so effective, that you can hit them square in the stomach and they will be laying right were they were standing.

There is a huge drop off in Velocity between the 87g Bullet and the 80g Blitz BT.

I had a load with R#19 with a Win primer that was super accurate at 3600 fps with the 80g Blitz, but for the life of me, I can not remember the charge...it was over max by what the book says.

Hornady makes a 58, 65, 75, and 87 V-Max.

I shoot the 87 V-Max in one of my 6mm Rems. H-4350 is a great powder for any light to medium weight bullet in the 6mm.

I have the Ackley with the same 1-10 twist and have found the Nosler 70-grain BT to be excellent on the range both in terms of accuracy and ballistic experiments. I’m using N-140 to power these. Secondly the 75-grain Vmax have also preformed well using N-160. I use 80-grain weight bullets and IMR-4064 for fire-forming my AI cases and hold their own no problem running ~3100 fps. I tired the 87-grain Vmax in the AI case but continued to get multiple flyers have not retried any since late summer. This is a new barrel for this winters coyote season and to date I have not found a willing coyote to test these on. However, I have used the 75-grain Vmax out of my 257 AI with excellent results. The powders you mention in conjunction with the manuals should work fine; I load for the standard 243 using Varget with great results. Others I have worked with are IMR-4320, N150, and N540 & N550 and as mentioned IMR-4064 – H414 comes to mind but that’s one I have not worked with. Hope this helps.

Thanks you guys. Looking through the load books was a little overwhelming as far as all the different possible bullets and powders. And I know I can trust anyone from Hickville! I am really looking forward to using this rifle. For some reason the 6mm/243 calibers have always held my interest but never found their way into my safe.
Thanks Chris

Ackleyman, what didn't you like about the bergers? The reason I am considering them is my 204 loves them and the critters hate them. Chris

Nosler 70gr. Ballistic Tip with IMR 4350 or 4895. I have gotten .5-.75" groups out of that bullet and both powers with a Rem 700 Varmint.

85 Gr Speer Boat Tail Spitzer loaded at 0.003 R.O (or less) is a very accurate bullet..
As for powder, pick one that will give you the velocity you desire & nearly fill the case as you work the load toward your rifles max velocity. FWIW, mag primers do work better most times when recommended in the manual.

I've had excellent results with the 69 & 70 Gr Bergers in my 6mm AI......can get messy in close, but I'm pushing these really hard. I'm certainly impressed with the accuracy these two can provide at the higher velocity extreme's; I would surmise that at lower velocity they might not be so destructive, and the standard 6mm would probably make that happen.

Good luck!

I am a 55gr BT guy with 53 grains of H380 which is a max load by the way. It chronys at 4080fps average over a 10 shot string and flat out accurate from my old style Ruger M77. If you have ever put 53 grains of H380 in a 6mm case, its almost like dippin the case in the powder and knockin the excess off the top and seat a bullet. I think actually its full to the bottom of the neck, but it shoots in my rifle.

I havnt shot it in years, but with coyote pelts worth nothing around here this year, been thinking about dustin it off! It will flat hammer a coyote right into the ground, but its heavy to carry and real hard on fur thats why it has stayed at home in the past.
