6mm vs 243

And Ford outsells Ferrari but which would you rather have??

The real problem which may be no problem what so ever for you is the short neck on the 243 case. In my old Sako Forester I had to seat the bullets out a way in order to get the accuracy I desired. Problem is I was in a big hurry to re-chamber a round one time and the projectile turned in the camber causing me to lose a coyote that had jumped on me and tried to bite my face.

The 6mm is easier to reload and slightly outperforms the 243. It would be my first choice. Converting to a 6mm Ackley Improved would even be better.

I had a .243 WSSM Model 70 that was like the hammer of Thor, 5 inch drop at 500 yards, bad hind quarter hits and they were still DRT, 55gr at 4100fps. I've been wanting an AR .243WSSM that is made by Newtown Firearms in Placerville, they will guarantee that it will shoot 6 inch groups at 600 yards and prove it to you. That would be wicked for multiples.

5" drop at 500 yards you say? Thats one heck of a blazing bullet. What was your zero?

I misspoke, I have a 350/375 yard shot behind the house, very slight few degree uphill, zeroed somewhere around 225 or so, little over an inch high at 100yds leaves me very little to think about between and out to 375 or so. I treat barrels with microlon which has checked out with a chrono to increase given velocities without it by almost 10%. As the velocities increase in faster cartridges I don't think you get nearly the 10% you see with slower cartridges, but I had it flatten my distances in everything I use for squirrels. I never had a chance to chrono the WSSM, but Winchester claimed 4000fps with their Supreme 55 grain cartridges. I think I was figuring it has half the drop a .243 does at 500 using a longer zero point.

The ONLY problem with the 6Rem is the long length. It is much better suited in a long action. ESPECIALLY if you want to shot long skinny high BC bullets. I always thought the 6AI would be the cats meow, so I built one on a long action to take advantage of the case capacity & the VLD style projectiles. Well, after barely getting it broke in I decided I hated the long action. The "pop" was terrible and just not all I thought it would be... Sold it & built another 6x47L, which personally I think outperforms both; for my purposes...
