6x45 good for deer and pigs?

Planning a deer/pig build and considering 6x45. Will be a woods/drive gun. 200yds and in. Thoughts? Or would 6.8 be better? I have a TON of 223 brass......

Yes a 6.8 would be better but a 6X45 will do it all too. Good bullet choices and shot placement will get it done at your stated range.

6TCU with 80gr sierra at 250yds. Killed another big whitetail with it this year and a nice muley last year as well as countless pigs to 300#.

Heck yea it's a good choice! I have a 1:10 Krieger for one of my 527s. It's more than enough.

As my neighbor up above has indicated, the 80 Sierra is a good bullet even at modest velocities.

6x45 and the 85g sierra GKHP will do them both and at 200-300 yards is simple life.
The other great antelope/deer/pig bullets in the 6x45, 80g barnes, 80g speer, 90g nosler HBT.
The 6.8 would be a tad better, but that 6x45 is just the icing IMO.

I have a 6mm WOA, and a couple of 6.8s. The 95 gr. Barnes TTSX bullet changes the game, well in favor of the 6.8 SPC. But the 80 gr. TTSX in 6mm, puts a hurt on anything it hits, too. Tough choice... I did them both.

A lot is barrel length dependent. As the barrel gets shorter the 6.8 begins to shine brighter. More energy in shorter barrels.

I killed several deer with my 20" AR using the 75gr Sierra HP. It worked really well & acted more like a controled expansion bullet at 6x45 velocities... Built a 6x45 bolt gun last year & killed 6 deer (out to ~250 yards) with it this year with the 70gr nosler. I never got any exits (bullet was always in off skin) but the deer never went very far either. 20 yards was the farthest sprinter... This was a typical bullet mushroom from the 70's.

I don't see a real need in going with monolithics, bonded, premium, or heavy for caliber bullets. The slower impact velocities of the 6x45 have varmint bullets acting much like a big game bullet would. Still, the heavier bullets will give you better exits if needed. However, I find the bigger wound channel helps stop as much as anything.
