7-08 brass out of 308 win

Is it a PITA to make 7-08 brass out of my 308 brass. I'm buying a rifle for my wife this weekend in 7-08. I have plenty of 308 brass laying around, so that's why I ask. Thanks in advance!

Go for it!

I make 25-06 out of 30-06 and
22-250 out of 250/3000 Savage.

My only concern is that if you still have a 308, you'll want to develop away to keep them separate, and marked well so that you don't grab the wrong stuff.

Just lube them up and neck them down. As Bigdog said make sure you have a way of marking them so you or anybody doesn't get confused.

Back in the 70's I had a ton of 30-06 brass and no 06, I did have a 270 though. So I necked 300-400 30-06 cases down to 270 and started loading and shooting.

I was out shooting ground squirrels with a buddy of mine one day tuning up for Deer season. I had my 270 and he had his 06, he's a great guy but cheep so and so and always looking to save a buck or get a freebee. He noticed I was shooting an 06 and snuck a couple of rounds out of my box to shoot.

We we're shooting about 250 yards and hitting 3 or 4 out of 5 regularly. We were also taking turns shooting. When his turn came up I was spotting for him, he took a shot and I didn't see anything. He tried again and no poof of dirt, rock fragments, nothing. One more with the same result, we checked his scope, scope mounts, stock screws, banged on the scope to see if the crosshairs would move around, NOTHING. I asked him if he had brought some ammo his gun wasn't sighted in for, NOPE.

He asked me to shoot a few rounds of his ammo to see if it was on. I told him I was shooting a 270 and his 06 ammo wouldn't work. He argued that I WAS shooting an 06 and pointed to my ammo. I laughed and told him it was 06 necked down to 270 and worked fine for me. He was sitting there with his mouth open staring at me. I asked him what was up and after a bit he confessed he had "borrowed" a few rounds to "try out".

The mystery was solved, he was shooting my 270's through his 06. They didn't hurt his gun and were safe to shoot, he just couldn't hit the side of the hill. Being "thrifty" works sometimes and sometimes it bites you in the butt.

pahntr760, when you neck down the 308's, the necks will grow a little, so count on having to trim them.

When I have a case that I have necked down from a parent case, I dip the piece of brass in "Insta Blue" used for touching up the blueing on barrels, the brass will be permanently marked in a dark color.

Awesome idea! I've been racking my brain cuz the Lapua brass for my 6x45 is marked .223REM. Been looking for a way to distinguish between them.

Thanks man

WOW that's a great tip it would also work for same caliber different guns.

Thanks!

Hi,
I make 270-08 brass from 308 Lapua. You have to make sure that when you neck down in size that the neck doesn't get too thick and a loaded round doesn't jam in the chamber neck. I'd measure a fired case neck and then measure a loaded round neck. The fired case neck will be a fraction smaller than the chamber neck size. If the neck diameter of teh loaded round is .002" smaller then it should be OK.

Be careful. If the loaded round jams it can explode and you won't be getting fed by your wife for a long time.

On your .223 brass you are using for 6x45, use different colored primers. That's the way to tell the difference without depending on the headstamp.
