70gr Speer

I would like to reload these in my swift for a special project.I would also like to use RL-17 to get the most velocity out of it.I've never loaded any of these and knew I should ask people that has, and so far this is the best site to get answers. It's a Ruger 77 tang safety 1-14 t,26" long. I have other powders to use so I would appreciate any and all help.

Bad news, that's to heavy for that slow twist. Probably the heaviest projectile it will shoot accurately is around 60 gr. If it were mine I'd just shoot 55 gr and be happy.

then is I have them now and I'm sure I seen some were that a 70gr speer could be shot out of a swift very accurately that's why I got them but if I can't well dang. thank you

I think you'd need a 1:9 or better twist to shoot the 70 gr but I'm not an expert on twist and .224 caliber.

The 70gr speer will shoot just fine with the twist in your rifle, I have shot a bunch out of two tang safetys and a no 1 in the swift with great results. Imr4064 always works great ...

Do you run at the upper end of the Imr4064 load for best results?

Yes... but work your way there...

Those 70 grain Speers shot well out of my original M77V Swift. I never did use them for deer hunting like I had planned on originally, but I have no doubt that they would have worked just fine.

A co-worker of mine used them to take a bighorn ram with a 22/250 back when I bought my first Swift. I figured if they would take a big heavy sheep that they would be just dandy for deer.

At higher elevation they work fine, but in Ohio I doubt it. I would be curious to see. Never shot them at lower elevation. The higher elevation lets you cheat with bullet stability because of the thin air and lower Barometer. Give it whirl. It may work for you. Let us all know too.

i tried some 69gr sierra's in my 1-14 twist 22-250 years ago. one hit the paper sideways, the other two never hit the paper.

i am at higher elevation than many. the range where i shot those rounds is about 6000' or so.

Yup. Those Sierra 69s are about .895 long. Too long for a 14 twist. You might get them to shoot in a 12 twist though at 6000'.

I ran the stability factor numbers on the 70gr Speer (measures .800 ) at 1000' elevation in a 14 twist at 3300fps I came up with a Sg of 1.05. At 6400' where I am, it has a Sg of 1.25.

Big difference in stability. At 1.0 it's real iffy. 1.2 is getting stable. 1.4 to 1.5 is said to be "stable" by long range shooters.

The 53gr Vmax is .830 long. Lots of people can not stabilize that bullet at lower elevation in a 14 twist, but I shoot them just fine in a 14 twist.

I shoot 55 vmax very accurately from a few 22-250s with 14 twist, they are measuring 0.818" and im at about 900ft above sea level. 55gr noslers also shot real nice. maybe I got lucky but I plan on trying 55sbk this summer just for s#$@s and gigs, they are measuring 0.824"

If you push them hard and fast they might work, but if they do work they will be on the ragged edge of stability.

I'll run the number for you if you give me a velocity.

If you mean me, I have not ran any of those loads over the chrony, weather has been crap all winter but will probably get to it once the weather turns nice as they are going to be my new pdog loads.

I would guestimate they are running in the 3650-3700fps range.
