My brother called me and wanted to do some shooting yesterday afternoon. My 223AI's bolt isn't back from its shifter upgrade from Patriot Arms yet, so I figured he could shoot the 22-250. I was wanting to switch that rifle over to moly anyway. I had some 77 SMK's and some Varget laying around that wasn't going to be used in anything else so I figured he could bang away with that combo, and get a good coat of moly in the bore while we were at it.
He doesn't get out to shoot with me too often so I let him do most of the shooting. He shot that combo fairly well. All shooting was prone with a bipod and bag. Put four loads on paper for groups at 230 yards, and just shot rocks and clays after that.
The avg of the 4 groups was .975" at 230 yards. The smallest was .732" and the largest was 1.108". I know he missed the nickel. These were all 3 shot groups and only one group of each charge weight. We weren't really working up a load, mostly just burning up powder, bullets, and goofing off. Speeds ranged from 3050 w/32gr up to 3200 w/33.5gr. of Varget. This same rifle shoots 75Amax's at 3300-3350. Anyway, he was pretty happy with the way he shot yesterday and I have some moly down the bore. All in all, not a bad way to get rid of powder and bullets.
Rifle specs:
22-250
1969 Rem 700 action
Rock #7 1:8" at 22"
HTG, pillar bedded
HS DBM Bottom metal.
Loopy 4.45-14x
