783 Heavy bbl?

as far as triggers, the venture trigger can be made very, very good with a simple spring change. anybody that has dabbled even a little bit with triggers can make the venture trigger super nice.

for a cheap entry level rifle the 783 aint bad. just not near as refined as the venture.

My venture has a decent trigger, not great but good enough I adjusted it a little and called it good. I prefer the non-accu trigger types without the saftey blade, that said my x7 has an outstanding trigger. Its set about 3.5 lbs and just as clean of a break as I could ask for. It's easily the best trigger I own.

Ya, but if "need" was a prerequisite, we'd all only have about two or three guns. I never let a silly little thing like, need, get in the way of a firearm purchase.

In reality, I don't either apparently from the numbers that I own. However, I do try to throw good money at quality stuff. I'm not seeing it in this instance.

I, generally, try to do the same, but I'd be remiss if I didn't admit I've made a few not so great purchases over the years.

I've done the same, but a Remington Model 783 won't be my next one.
 
I probably shouldn't but I'm a bit interested in one of those shorty 783's with the heavy barrel in 6.5 Creed. The bolt handle isn't nearly as fugly as the regular 783 and the barrel is already threaded 5/8x24 so at only 16.5 on the barrel my SAS Barricade screwed on the end will only be a little over 22 inches in length, suppressed. It could turn out to be a huge waste of time and money but as a friend of mine often tells me, there's worse things you can spend your money on.
 
A Borden Action is the way to go when you are waning quality+. A lot of these "custom" actions have a high price tag, look trick, but machining is not so good, with threads that need to be trued, lock time that is terrible, and bolt handle that is not timed properly.

A friend is coming out with a book that states the strength of actions including customs, many are going to be shocked. Bolt heads on actions are a particular interest in terms of safety, lug shear strength.
 
I totally understand the buying quality statement but for my intended use it would be a shame to be a nice gun around on an ATV rack plowing through mud and everything else Plus I want something extremely compact. So that's why I asked about this one because I normally would have no interest in a 783 except in this particular circumstance. But as someone else Pointed OUT with the deals on a TC I could buy one whack the barrel off and have a better gun And leas money in it

I fully understand where you'e headed and why you might choose a rifle like these.

My responses about quality were directed at those who would like to make others believe that the Remington Model 873 is the best thing since sliced bread and peanut butter in terms of quality. It simply isn't.
 
I picked up these 2 Remington actions, and they ARE really NICE!

The lock-up is very solid and cycling the bolt is smoother than many of the Remington 700 actions I have had my hands on!

And the factory triggers? I have both triggers worked town to a very crisp 36 ounces with no creep!

Both actions will be set up as a single shot.

Right now, I am not sure whether or not I will keep the barrel lock nuts, but it really just depends if I decide to go with a sporter weight barrel or a heavy bull barrel. I'm still trying to decide on what cartridge I want to chamber for. I have been thinking about a 7mm TCU in a light weight sporter for a walk around rifle, but no idea for a second choice. Decisions, decisions...

What do you plan to use for bottom metal or will you make these into single shots?

I've been told the factory detachable mag setup works pretty well on these 783's but not ever owning one, I have no first hand information on that.

Really? Just curious but in what way?

I'm familiar with the old 788's but certainly no expert on them and just kinda mildly familiar with the 783's, but other than them both sharing the name Remington, I don't really see any similarity.
 
Mostly the ejection port. Of course the bolts are different and triggers. Just kinda the way the action looks reminds me of them. I finally saw a picture of the 783 and the short heavy barrel. I admit, the do look interesting.

when I first caught a glimpse of the Remington 783 actions, my first thought was, those look like the old 788 actions! The ejection port was what made me think that, but a closer look changed my mind about that.

I will machine an aluminum block to fill in the gap where the follower goes, bed it in place, and make a single shot out of it. These actions are very "solid", and I believe they will make for a wonderfully accurate little rifle.
