hey i'm new here and i was wondering what a good factory load for varmint hunting is. i have heard that i shouldn't use "penetrating" bullets because they may not expand and will fly in some random direction when they exit and land wherever.

i bought some 120 grain remington hollow points recently but haven't shot any yet.

i DON'T reload but want too but don't have a suitable location for it.
 
I don't shoot a 7mm/08, but I would suggest looking for some factory loads in a 120gr ballistic tip or v-max. That should work.

The rounds that you have should do the trick provided they show any accuracy in your rifle.
 
I haven't varminted with my 08 yet, but I use to use my 280 on groundhogs and it split'em open pretty good with the Hornady SST 139 grain bullets. I think you can get the same bullet in the 7mm-08. My experience with the SST was it was so rapid expanding that it was too harsh on deer meat, almost hitting full expansion on contact, like a big V-max. The Federal Premiums shot one hole groups out of my model 7, but I feared the shredded dear meat, so I went with the old faithful Rem. Core-lokt for my 7mm-08. As a side note, the SST's consistantly gave softball size or larger entry wounds on deer from several rifles with a wide variety of loadings from minimum recommended to maximum with few exits. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
I can tell you that the 120gr Bal Tip is a tougher bullet than one would assume. Nosler beefed up the jacket a few years ago for the metalic shooting. Great for deer or even elk. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I would use the v-max in the 120gr wt.

well there aren't any factory loaded 120 vmax or ballistic tip but www.cpcartridge.com loads both or at least the nosler i think. have you had any experience with them or there products.

in the next year or so i think i'm gonna buy an nef 223 and camo it and use it for varmints and the like.
 
No help on those products. I would use 140bal tips if expense is not a problem, they have a thinner jacket than 120's. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
If I was you I would try the Fed Hi-shok in the lightest weight available. Cheap and usually fairly accurate.
 
I think the smallest factory load is a 140 for a7mm-08,I have shot some yotes with this load,and it works great.You won't have to do much or any tracking with a140,they also do wonders on a whitetail deer.I've never lost a animal that I've shot with any Ballistic tip,in any caliber.
