I bought one and plan on making it my primary deer rifle this coming season. Most of my shots are 100 or under and I like behind the shoulder shots.

So for those of you who use the 7mm-08 for deer, what are some bullets that you liked and some that you tried and did not like?


****Yes, I know I need to shoot various ammo through it to see what it shoots the best and I will do that.
 
Buddy of mine kills deer every year with his 7-08 using the Hornady American Whitetail rounds. I believe it’s the 139 gr Interlock that is loaded in them.
 
One of my favorite cartridges! I have had great results with 140gr Nosler Partitions. Accuracy was excellent and the Partition is legendary for a reason. Also as stated , hard to go wrong with Hornady 139’s. The last time using the 7mm-08 I loaded Sierra 120 grain soft points and had a nice bump in velocity but more importantly was the accuracy I got with them. You didn’t mention if you reload or not but a quick look at Midway showed 44 results for 7-08 ammo.

I load 120gr V-max’s as a coyote load and it makes quite a mess so that is the only bullet I can say I would not use on deer.

Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip will do everything that needs being done in the whitetail world.

Some deer hunters like a heavy for cartridge bullet when typical distances are under 100 yards. If you are in that group, the Berger 150 classic hunter is a very accurate, easy bullet to develop loads with. A great rib cage bullet.
 
I'm a 7mm-08 fan, so much so that I built an AR10 chambered in that cartridge. Aero M5 base platform with a custom ordered 18" barrel from X-Caliber. Managed to take a decent buck this year with it using hand loads with the Hornady 139gr SST. Later in the season I discovered the Barnes 120gr TTSX shoots extremely well so next year that will be my preferred load.

 
Wife's been using a Remington youth model 7 in 7mm-08 for deer hunting since 98, I load 140gr Nosler Partitions and they are not anywhere near max loads, she's dropped them out at 200yrds on occasion.
 
Been loading for my kids 708 for almost 2 decades. Settled on heavy for caliber 150-175 they kill everything up to and including elk.
At 100 yards just about anything will work. A heavy slower moving bullet or a controlled expansion lighter bullet will damage less meat.
 
My favorite deer round. My vote is another for 139gr SST or Interlock. Excellent bullet, and excellent price; killed many deer with them and never shot twice.
