7mm mag scope

I bought a 7mm mag and it came with a cheap scope so I am looking to upgrade. This is a hunting rig and my shots won’t exceed 500 yards. I have been looking at a leupold vx-2 4-12x40 ao which is about $450. For $450 or less is there a scope you would purchase instead of the leupold? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I think you will be hard pressed to find a better scope at that price point. Excellent glass, great company and warranty. Don't overlook the 3-9 flavor. I have one on my recent 6.5x47 Lapua build and I am quite happy with it. I feel the 3-9x is plenty of glass for 500 yards, IME.

I have a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 with the BDC reticle on 7MM Mag. I like it very well. The furthest I've taken a deer was 225 yds. But I've shot out to 500 yds at the range. For $400, with side focus, I'm having trouble remembering why I should buy Leupold. I'd take this scope any day over my VX3. Clearer, better eye relief, less money.

I would second the Vortex. I've never seen anyone put the VX2 in the same ballpark as th Viper HS, HS:T, or PST. Once you step up to the VX3 they're pretty close. They're discontinuing the HS duplex models, so they can be found dirt cheap. I think the 2.5-10 is $300.

Vortex warranty is outstanding (not that Leupold is bad), but Ive never used theirs. I bought a used PST that was "like new". Old owner didn't talk about the dents from over tightening the rings. Sent it in and they could not repair so they replaced.

Vortex isn't even close.

I like the VX2 option as well..........

Compared to said Leupold VX2 4-12x40, a few reasons why I'd pick the VX2 over the Viper for a hunting rifle include:

Leupold has MORE eye relief on average

Leupold weighs 5.2 ounces less

Leupold has 17 MOA more internal adjustment

Leupold mounts lower (low rings)

As the OP stated "this is a hunting rig". I like lightweight scopes that mount low on HUNTING rigs. Not 30mm tubes that offer ZERO internal adjustment advantage at the expense of much greater weight.

JMO......

I have a Vortex Diamondback and a Meopta Meopro and it smokes the Vortex, its like night and day. that said the Meopro was twice the Diamondback in price. I have looked thru a Viper and it was nice. It may just be me but the Vortex scope's seem to have very thin crosshairs and to me that makes them harder to see in low light. The #4 reticle in the Meopro is great for a hunting rig. PM me and I can shoot a place running a good deal on them.
