7mm Rem Mag Deer loads

I've pulled the trigger on a 7MM Rem Mag Tikka and am starting to find some bullets for a good deer load. I'm really leaning towards the Barnes X bullet (Triple Shock) though. My question is what grain bullet would those of you experienced in shooting the 7mm recommend? 140 or 150 gr bullets or heavier?

Thanks for your help!

I would recommend something in a 150 gr. I shot 150's last year with great results on deer Winchester powerpoint. This year I shot 162gr. Hornady AMAX and it just exploded on impact, done the job, but did not even get a pass thru.

I shoot the 140gr. triple shocks out of my 7mm mag. and have taken mulitple deer and 2 elk with no problems what so ever.

I used to load my 7 Mags with 160 grain Partitions going around 2950-3000 fps. In my smaller 7x57 I shoot the 140 grain partitions and they kill deer great. I would use what you like and shoots the best in your gun. If I was going to hunt elk and deer I would shoot the 160's. But I like heavy bullets and heavy arrows.

I always used Hornady 139's and 154's in my 7 mag. Never had it fail. Used the 139's most of all. Killed one Mule Deer at 400 yds with the 154's. DRT, it just kicked a little more.

Did you use the SST's Steve? I use the 95gr SST's in the .243 and really liked them. All were DRT or at least didn't move an inch (spined one!). Just want more thump and to try something new! Thought I read somewhere that people were having problems getting the 139's to shoot accurately?

You should use which ever shoots best in your gun. I shoot 160 gr. partitions in my 7 Mag. and 150 gr. partitions in my 280 Rem.

I understand that I should shoot what works best but from my experience with Tikka's they shoot pretty much everything well. Just haven't worked up a load for a caliber this large yet. Hate to blow 40 bucks on a box of 50 bullets to find they don't expand well on thin skinned deer.

Since I'm a big Hornady Fan, I'll probably just pick up some 139 sst's and find a load that it likes best. Still want to try some barnes TSX's to see if the velocity increases that some advertise when using them are real. Thinking STW performance with the same amount of powder would be fun.

SDVmnt,
I used 65 gr. of RL-22 and the 139 gr. SST to take my SW Kansas mule deer this year with my 7 RM. Velocity was right at 3000 fps out of my Weatherby Vanguard. Could have gotten more horsepower, but this load was very accurate, so I didn't try to play the 'most fps' game.

Centered the crosshairs just under the chin at 150 yards head on, went through, took out the spine, exited between the shoulder blades, (exit about the size of a quarter), and then proceeded to clip all of the hair down the spine to about 6" in front of the tail, he never even twitched.

I neck sized to get this load, and I came home and worked up another 2 boxes for next season!

Good Luck!
Tim

The 150g Sierra BT with 63.0g of IMR 4350, Rem case, 9 1/2 primer has shot great in several different 7 mags of mine. The 154 G Hornady is a little tougher bullet.

With the 160g Sierra BT Sp, 61.0g of IMR 4350, Rem Case, 9 1/2 primer has killed over 100 deer between my brothers and father.

No doubt that the barnes 140g Tripple shock with 65.0g of IMR 4350, Rem Case, or 9 1/2 seated .050 off the lands is a great bullet.

For regular deer (not the super deer), any of the regular bullets above will suffice, and the 154g HOrnady with the load above has accounted for several elk shot through the sholders.

Good luck!

SDV they were the plain old bullets. Back they they did not have the fancy ones like SST's. LOL!!! Used 4831 with Rem 9 1/2 primers. Under an inch at 100 with both bullets. Ran them at the same vel. Max for the 154 in accuracy and vel equaled lighter load in the 139's but they shot really well.
