7mm Rem Mag rebarreled to 257 Weatherby mag?

I have wanted a 257 Weatherby for along time but just not wanting a 24" barrel and can see spending over a grand for factory rifle.

Has anyone rebarreled a Savage 7mm Rem Mag to the 257 Weatherby? If so how did it work and what should I look out for to make the project successful?

Why? You could run 100-120s out of the rem mag and not spent the money on weatherby brass. To each his own. In sure it would work just fine

I like the 25 calibers. The 25-06 has been a real joy and for what ever reason the 257 Wby facinates me. The price of brass and availabilty has always kept me staying with the 06.

Somewhere I thought I read where there is 25 caliber using the 270 WSM case and was equal to the Weatherby. Probably easier to get brass for. Haven't seen much on the 257 STW.

Around here the only thing you can use it on is coyote. We have been prairie doggin for a number of years and am looking to Antelope hunt sometime soon, if the numbers come back. "Antelope and money!" I ain't just the economy now stupid!

only weatherby ive shot was a 300wby. I wasn't real hot on it over the ultra mag. seems like it would be hard on barrels with that much case capacity. I shot a 25wssm and I like it. I was thinking about trading my 243wssm for it. but its your game and im sure itll do just fine, just the price on that high dollar brass. its worse than lapua or norma

I have had both a 7mm RemMag and the .257WBY and I can understand your fascination. The WBY is a great round. Great enough, in fact, that after loaning it to a neighbor for a Mule deer hunting trip, he refused to give it back. Literally. I finally just bartered a good deal for it. There will be no trouble with a Savage rebarreled to the .257 at all. The OAL and case length are so close as not to prove to be a problem and the greatest difference is the shoulder shape. If you rebarrel a rifle, I would simply make sure that the barrel maker includes the Weatherby leade. Weatherby cartridges have a long leade that helps mitigate the high pressures that factory ammunition produces.

OR, simply buy a WBY Vanguard. The price of the Vanguard is only a modest amount over the price of a new barrel plus gunsmith work and you will have two great rifles instead of one.

I would do the 257wby. If you have had you fun with the 7mag, why not!!!!
The 257wby is a flat out awesome round.. Jason

Is yours a Vanguard? I keep thinking it would be nice to have a 26" barrel to get the full effect of cartridge. I had one Vanguard in a 22-250 heavy barrel and traded on Tikka Varmint. The Vanguard was frustratingly inconsistant and that has kept me from buying another one.

Mine is/was the Vanguard Sub-MOA. Shoots like a house afire! The factory target that came with the rifle showed a 3/4" group, shot with a 100grn Hornady softpoint factory round. I was able to improve on that with a Barnes 100grn X-bullet and Rl-22. Velocity was not up to factory levels but, plenty quick and then some.

I have owned two Vanguards. One standard and one Sub-MOA. I have owned three Howa 1500s. Virtually the same rifle. All have shot well with little or no load development. My current 22-250 is a WBY Vanguard and with Sierra Blitzking bullets with shoot .6" groups at 100 yards. Powder charge is a bit under max in the Hornady manual.

I did just that with a Rem 700 LH. Started life as a 7mm. Trued the action, Mcgowen barrel, chambered .257 Wthyby, Bedded the stock, Trigger, and we were off to the races.
You may want to research Weatherby freebore, and decide if that is how you want to go, or tighten the length up a bit.
Mine shoots lights out. Never regretted the caliber conversion.
Overall a great performer on whitetail, antelope, and bear. (not to mention anything smaller). Fast as can be with no real recoil. Brass and ammo are the only real drawbacks. But 62gr of 4831 with a 120 Nosler is a hard combo to beat in mine.
I went with a 22 in bbl. YMMV. Have fun putting this on together.

257 stw info here. I think I read in this months rifleman mag that a 257 stw can be necked down from a 8mm case. I have a 257 weatherby and love it I went with the rem 700 version and saved about 500 over a factory gun and it has a 26 fluted barrel. Shot a deer 2 years ago at 330 yds and it never moved. Bang flop. I shoot the 115s for better BC.

What would be the problem? Using the Savage nut just screw on a new barrel. I've switched a couple Savages to magnum boltface and made them 257Wby's. One barrel has a shoulder, the other a nut. There isn't much to it. If you can get any PMC brass or ammunition do it.....that stuff is the best for this cartridge.

Good Info! Does anyone recommend a barrel maker? Didn't know if there is once that possibly does more with this caliber.

Shilen, Hart, Rock Creek, Bartlein, Benchmaster, Pac-nor, Obermeyer, Montana Rifleman, would be a good few to consider.
