7mm Rem Ultra Mag

I have been doing a lot of research on the 7 RUM, 7mm WSM, and the 270 WSM. The 7mm WSM and the 270 are about a horse apeice. My selling point was this weekend when I shot a coyote at 302 yards with the Ultra Mag.

The question i have for everyone is what gun should I get in the Ultra Mag? I really want a Sendero but 1300 is just to much to pay for a deer rifle that may be shot at most 10 times a year in some cases....and I will probably only hunt elk with it 3-5 times in my life. Anyone have a 7mm Ultra in the XCR?? The XCR is much lighter than the Sendero but is it heavy enough to take some of the brunt of the recoil?? If I can't come up with the money for the XCR I will probably get the SPS and am just a little worried about the weight of the gun being to light. Guess a muzzle break is always an option but I like my ears and want to keep them for a while.

700 bdl it could be a number of things plus I havent shot it in years its an older one with a 24" barrel

IT feels like it bites into my shoulder where the 300 just jumps around and thumps. I also shoot an old 721 300 hh that is a dream to shoot as it just pushes you

I shot a sendero at that coyote last weekend and it was awesome...but like i said its just tough to pay that much for a gun i may only shoot 500 times in its lifetime...so i have to look elsewhere

Weather you buy an expensive gun or a cheaper gun I would buy one that you like to shoot. I bought a savage model 112 7 mm rem mag several years ago and I hated shooting it until I bought a different stock for it then I loved shooting it. It kicked really bad with the factory stock but with the Choate stock I put on it, it didn't hurt at all. I could shoot it all day long with the choate stock and not hurt at all. I don't like having a gun that I don't like shooting. If you have a gun that you like shooting you will shoot it more than you think and definitely more than a gun that hurts you when you shoot it.

I suggest you buy a Tikka they have a sub moa accuracy guarantee. I would suggest you consider the cost of the ammo as a factor in choosing your cartridge.

I would recommend you go with a lighter recoiling rifle if you want to enjoy shooting it more. The .270 should be a fine choice I have a friend who shoots his elk every year with a .270 so buy a 7mm mag if you like but you will pay two or three times as much for ammo or brass if you hand load.

My friend owns a 7MM RUM on a 700 with a laminate stock and to my surprise, it is fairly easy on the shoulder. The ballistic are impressive but a pound of powder wont take you very far if you roll your own.

I have a 700 xcr in 7mm ultra and 300 ultra. They dont buck to bad. Alot lighter than a sendero. They shoot great. If you dont reload look to spend $50 a box. You are going to spend around $800-$900 on a xcr. You can get a sps for $600.

If your not looking to shoot long range with it, I wouldn't even think of the 7 RUM.

Go with a 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag. Put a 160g AB in the 7, or a 180-200g AB in the 300, and your good out to 800 yards providing you are...

I will be reloading so price of ammo is not quite as big of factor.

I have heard reloading belted brass for the 7mm mag and 300 mag is tougher to do. That is why I went the direction of the 7 RUM or the 7mm/270 wsm.

I shoot a 700 BDL with a lam stock in the 7RUM.I put a brake on it and I can shoot it all day.The bark is not to bad on the ears but it is a little loud for anyone next to you.Bobby

No comparison between those two calibers and the 7 RUM for long range shooting. Honestly backy....go with the SPS stainless and spend the money you save between that and the XCR and buy yourself a different stock as someone on here suggested. You could get a really nice Bell and Carlson, McMillan, or HS that would add some weight. That would probably help dramatically.

Your right there is no comparison between the 2 at long range. The RUM simply outdoes them. There is a price for that [beeep], and one has to look at his scenarios and find what actually will suit his needs. 7 RUMs are barrel burners, severly overbore, sometimes picky to find a really good load for. Its a specialized family of cartridges IMO designed for long range hunting/shooting.

If ones not shooting farther then 500-600 yards on a regular basis, there is no need for them IMO.

If you want it to be heavier then go ahead and buy the sendero instead of the sps stainless. When you add the price of a $300 stock plus the price of the gun you can just about buy a sendero.

In Northeastern South Dakota, Long range capability is a must in some cases. There are times when a shot presents itself at 500-600 yards and I want to have the gun to take that shot. But I just don't want to rush into one without knowing my best option.
