Thinking about buying a 7mm STW but I don't know much about the round. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif My uncle just got one and I sighted it in for him and really liked the round. He also does not know mush about it. He only bought it from a coworker that need the money to get his wife a b-day gift. So any and all info on this round would be great. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

What does STW sand for?

Shooting Times Western is what STW stands for. I don't know anything with great details, however, I do have a few friends that own them. They are a very flat shooting rifle, but by looking at the shell you could probably guess that, as it burns a lot of powder to do so.

I guess, it would be easier, and you'd get more replies if you asked specific questions. What is it that you want to know about it?

Take care,

Steve

Welcome to the forum!

Shooting Times Westerner

I have one in a 700 sendero, The STW is a 8mm rem mag necked down to 7mm. I love it and load alot of ammo for it. Fast and flat, makes for a long range hunting rifle. If you are going to reload I would start with H1000 powder. not as fast as some others but real consistant. Mine will shoot most anything in bullets but really likes the 139 interlocks and 140 ballistic tips.

Fun round, enjoy it !!

I want to get one in Model 70 Classic, Featherweight™, Stainless but it does not come in 7mm STW. But I have heard of people havung there 7mm sent in to get them done in 7mm STW. So I gess what I am asking is what 7mm do I buy it in and have sent in to make it a 7mm STW?

i have a 700 rem. with a pacnor barrel. 7stw. you need at least 26 inches of barrel for optimum performance. you also need an extra long action like a 700remington magnum action. or a winchester extra long action. or you will have to seat the bullets very deep to fit the magazine. awesome cartridge. i shoot 150 balistic tips 3300fps.

dogbustin,
The STW has been one of my cartridge enthusiasms since it was introduced. I have shot whitetail, muledeer, antelope, elk, moose and caribou with it. I'm on my fourth barrel.
The Featherweight would be a poor choice to build one on, as much as I like them. The cartridge really needs a 26" pipe. The Featherweight stock doesn't look right with one. I don't think that Winchester chambers the cartridge anymore, but you should be able to find a new one in the system. I saw a listing just the other day. I believe that Sako still chambers the 75 in STW, my buddy's shoots great but weighs about a pound more than it needs to. Ruger puts it in the #1 too. With Model 70s I have used the magnum length action, plus the regular long action with the bolt stop shortened and mag spacer removed. Both work, but the magnum set-up is a bit better. My current one was a factory chambered rifle, it is now wearing a 26" Gaillard barrel, .312 neck chamber, blueprinted action, Tubb speed lock and Jewell trigger. Current scope is a 3.5-10 VX111 with a 4.5-14 LR with B&C in the mail.
Recoil is similar to the .300 Win mag, stiff but not really that bad.
I don't know what kind of country you hunt in, but you can basically forget about holdover to close to 400 yards on a deer sized target. That will take care of most anything that needs doing.

man it would thump them

Yep, you can say that again! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif There's not a lot of time spent wondering if you hit something.

New name?

Dogleg's description is pretty good. Including; "I'm on my fourth barrel."

Barrel life is no problem if you are only going to hunt big game, it will probably last a lifetime. For anything else it may be an important factor.

You will have to get an H&H Model 70 Whinchester action to build the STW or Ultra mags. The 700 Remington Magnum action is the way to go on the STW. They will fit right in it.

140 barnes XLC with 79.0 IMR7828 is like a laser out of the 7MM STW.

I couldnt register as 17 shooter in the chat room. said the name was allready taken. This is the name I use on Instant messenger systems and other web sites.

Mine used to be 7rem mag. took it to a local smith and he rechambered it, bedded it, and installed a new trigger. Most should be able to preform this for you. I am going to rebarrel it next year, want to see a stw really preform use a 28" pipe! My buddy put a 28 on a 300 ultra mag, got a nice jump in vel. I am also going a little tighter twist as the one on it now, it will not shoot the heavy bullets to well, 160 or higher.

Its a long range killer
Store your bullets in rock salt!

Hi of the 2 rifles the 7mm STW and the 7mm Ultra mag . Which of the 2 is the flattest shooting rifle. VM

according to Hodgdons online data to the Nosler book in front of me, there isnt much difference between the two. Except the ultra has to burn 10 to 15 % more powder to get the same published velocity.

I had to look this up in my Hodgdon Book the load i look up a 150gr bullet and both had a 24 inch barrel. The 7mm Umag was burning more powder. But out shooting it by 324 fps i would shoot the extra powder to get the speed. But that is just my 02. cents worth. VM

Hey that just what I got between the two references I used, the ultra is the same or a little better up to 150 fps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Like I said between the references I used. I do know the heavier the bullet the more advantage to the ultra.
