7mm Ultra or SAUM

As long as you can get brass for the 7mm SAUM why not go for it. Thats the only part of the equation that makes it really any different than any other 7mm for handloading.

Personally I like shooting something different than what everybody else has.

If it is a model 700 in saum for a good price why not but not a model 7. At least with the 700 you have a whole lot of options for custom the 7 does too just not as much

You read that right 3400 fps.

you need a new chronograph, yours is malfunctioning

I recall an article a few years back, where the author ran the WSM and the SAUM against one another and preferred the SAUM. Wish I could remember where I read it. He stated that in their 1000yd tests, the SAUM was found to be just as accurate, but more efficient.

Hey Nitis
You stated(I call BS here you cant get an ultramag to push them that hard)
Not really 3400 fps but really 3370 fps.
And if you dont believe that bring your money, lots of it!

Tested with 2 different cronys, which cost more then you can afford.

Back on topic...

Huntnpa,

Unless you intend to shoot a lot at extended distances (500+) you will not see any advantage to the Ultra. It will cost you more and knock you around a lot more for a small improvement at short/medium trajectories. The remington web sight shows only a 1.3" difference at 300 (150 yrd zero/140 gr bullet from both).

For 95% of your shooting you will be well served by the SAUM. Sure ammo is harder to find and more expensive (actually see it on sale a lot now), it will do real well. Also, the Ultra stuff is not cheaper or easier to find. Its a great excuse to start handloading though

. It is a great combo in the model 7 too. The SAUM is my choice over the WSM, for several reasons and will be the base for my next 25 cal project.

I bought my 7mm SAUM with the intent of building a 25 SAUM and after shooting it and looking at the ballistics, I saw no reason to do it.

I have a 7 saum and I rather like it. Like people here have stated, factory ammo is hard to find. I reload, so not a problem. I like shooting it more than my '06. A friend has the 7ultramag. I dont see any pracical advantage of the UM over the SAUM in real world hunting. Get which ever one that calls your name.
