7mm08 for coyotes?

We've shot fox and coyote with 7mm-08 using those same 140gr fusions. Fox weren't damaged any worse than if hit by a .22-250 and the coyote generally have a 7mm entry, 50 cent piece exit. I've seen far worse. My only issue comes from using heavily constructed big game bullets in the populated wide open spaces here in Iowa. Is it a problem in your case (Georgia)? I don't have a clue.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think this gun will do great until I decide to move to something that shoots a bit flatter. As far as issues with the bullets, I want a dead coyote, and don't really care what the furs look like when he hits the dirt. I'm just ready to start knocking down a few critters

I used the Sierra 100gr HP when I still had a 08 and it was a varmint thumper...very accurate, kinda wish I still had one.

Norman Johnson, a noted fur hunter and writer from Wisconsin, used a 7mm Mag to take over 300 Red fox and coyotes using a 120gr SP. He liked it just fine, so your 7mm-08 will work good.

I think I'm going to pick up some of the 120gr Fusions or BT's (if I can find them) and ride it out for a little while with this rifle. I can evaluate my need for a flatter shooting rifle as I get into it, or could look at something like an AR build

I have used 7mm-08 with BTs and won't ever again. All they do is make a mess unless you are shooting fairly far.

I think you are underestimating your 7mm-08. It shoots plenty fast/far. I have been using 120gr TSXs. They shoot flat, kill with authority, and don't do much fur damage......

That right there is some outstanding advice for anyone that is trying to use a big game chambering for pelt saving predator hutning. I once shot a G-Hog at 170ish yds with a 120gr Vmax in my 7/08. The explosion was incredible. I shot another one a couple of years later at about the same distance with a 150gr Sierra SBT. While the FPE picked it up off the round bail and flipped it a couple of times in the air, there really wasnt that much damage done to it.

Digging up a thread here, I know, but I hit my second coyote with my M77 7-08 this weekend and I was using 120 grain Fusions both times and both times I had facing shots.

The first dog was quartering towards me and I hit her low right front shoulder (due to my terrible trigger control), which completely destroyed the front shoulder and dropped the little September girl on the spot-right at 40 paces or so.

The second one was facing me, nearly dead-on at right around 200 yards, maybe a little under. I hit in what must have been nearly the same spot, but I didn't recover a dog when I hiked down, up and across the canyon I shot over. (Okay, maybe more than 200 yards.) Anyways, I couldn't find any blood and both my hunting partners watched the yote spin three times before taking off over a short ridge.

I think Fusions are fine deer bullets and GREAT for plinking, but, if the bullet doesn't make solid bone connection, there isn't enough expansion/explosion for consistent energy transfer on all shots, including less-than-ideal or (in my case) less-than-proficiently-placed shots. I just ordered dies for my -08 and I look forward to trying new loads in my rifle. If you know of a source for 7mm Fusion bullets, let me know and I will continue to test them on yotes.

I hunt yotes regularly with my 708 in Mississippi . I use a Speer 130 gr boattail and 43 grs of h4895 . I have a 3X9 on mine and range has not been an issue . I think you already have a very good yote gun. I have a number of 22 Centerfires and use my 708 regularly . You might be beter served getting some loading equipment .
