7x57 Imp Vs 280 Remington

I have been researching this for nearly two + weeks. My great room is littered with reloading manuals, articles ECT. I need the boards input 7x57 Improved (40 degree) Vs standard 280 Remington. Ballistics on each are nearly the same however the cost of doing the 7x57 Imp places me about $255.00 over budget when the chamber reamer and extra dies are factored in . I find no bad or negative comments written on either cartridge. All comments are welcome and appreciated.

Regards,

Buck

May I throw in one more for you to consider..........
.284 Winchester and for these reasons.

35o shoulder and staight wall body much like the AckImp
cartrige
No need to fire form brass
It has the same bullistic as the 280 Remington
Dies cost the same

I would go with the 280 Ack Imp and it will out do both of the ones you are considering and dies are much cheaper. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Most gun nuts just have to try the so called Improved cartridges. It was Ackley who named them thus when he copied and ran with the idea and work of Lysle Kilbourn who did it first.

I have a few as I am a gun nut. They are fun but not improvements. Have fun.

The ones done on rimless designs such as the 7-57 as you mention do well if the barrel is set back as it should be to a negative headspace.

Some like a short round in a long magazine to seat bullets out to the lands. Others like to fill the magazine so that a CRF rifle will really be CRF.

Another round thats coming out, maybe, is the 280 AI which may or not be a true "AI" on the 280 Rem. case. Lets wait and see what Saami does with the exact chamber and case dimensions. That one is going to be interesting to us 'headspace' afficiandos.

Can't really say a thing about the 7x57 imp.but the 280 I can.I have had a 280 in my safe for the past 15 years and the cartridge has never let me down.Very nice round you would be hard pressed to find another cartridge to preform as well as it.Load it up ,down you can't miss plus if you are in the need of cartidges in butt fck egypt you can pull into the local Walmart and have a very good shot at getting them.Game animals up to and including elk are on the menu for this cartridge.I'm not saying that the 7x57 won't do the same but you are dealing with an unaltered case here with the 280 and you can improve it at a later date if you need to or get bored with its stellar preformance /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Have killed 9 deer with a 280, you will never be unhappy with it. EASY to load for with H4831 and a large variety of pills makes the 280 a true winner, buy one and never look back. Will drop anything that walks, crawls, or wiggles in continental US.

I have a 7x57(not imp) and a 280. Both are on Mauser 98 actions. If loaded hot, but safe for modern guns, the 280 beats the 7x57 by maybe 125-150fps using 150gn bullets. I guess that one could just about match the 280 with an improved. I built my 280 with a heavy 26" sporter because I wanted a rifle to hold steadier at longer ranges. Unless you need the extra range, go with the 7x57. If you want the extra range go with the 280. I considered the improvrd in both and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. capt david

Buck 358,

I would go with the 280 Remington. With proper hanloads, you cna cover anything from 7mm Mauser/7mm-08 level up to closing in on the heels of the 7mm Rem Mag.
If you are wanting something different, I would look at the 280 AI. This will give you 7mm Rem Mag performance with less powder and 5 shells in the rifle.
My 700 action with a Hart #5 flutted 24" tube shoots the Nosler 160 gr AB avg MV of 3019 fps and accuracy is in the .2"s.
You can also shoot factory 280 Remington ammo too.

The load I have settled on for my 280AI is the 180gr JLK bullet at 2950fps. I tried them up to 3000fps but around 2950 is more accurate. This is not a light recoil caliber. The recoil is on par with the 300 mag shooting the same weight bullets.

You can't go wrong with a .280 Rem. I've used a Remington 700 for over 30 years on most NA game animals. It's my favorite BG rifle.

+1 on the 284. I did the same research trying to figure out whether to buy a 280 or a 284. The 284 won hands down.
It is a stellar cartridge, and very accurate.
