I am looking for another shotgun that can shoot 3 1/2" hevi shot. Is this gun good enough? I have heard that some people have problems with them not ejecting shells? also will a scope mount on this because I was planning on putting a red dot scope on it. also how does it pattern with #4 shot.

Yes, it will accept a scope mount. I would look at other guns though. I had one from '92-'94. The gun went off on its own one day in a duck blind. I never shot it after that. I don't like that top safety at all. I have two Beneelli's, one SBE and one M1S90. I'd look at a Benelli Nova or Remington 870 Super Magnum if you don't want to fork out the $ for a Benelli auto.

bigben, i've had one for a few years, haven't shot it for the last two. this is the one and only gun that i can honestly say i think was a total waste of money. Sure, it can shoot 3.5 inch shells, but this gun shoots low on everything, and not just for me. I read on here(or another site, not sure) that some 835's came from the factory with bent barrels. not sure if that is true or not, but would sure explain alot in my case. i would definitely say look at something else. but hey, its your $$$.

I have a huntin' buddy who keeps one in the boat, "just in case".........."just in case the engine konks out and he can use it as an oar"!! I owned one a few years back and it drove me crazy because I was always short stroking it and it would jamb or not load a fresh round in the chamber. I know that some will say it was operator error, and I'll admit it probably was, but, my current backup gun is a Bennelli Nova and I've never had a problem with it. I say backup gun because my main gun now is a Winchester Super X2 and I love it. I'd say stay away from the 835 and get a Nova instead.

bigben, i have had one for 8 yrs now and everytime i take it out it gets the job done. it might be a little crude but it is built like a sherman tank.when i lived on the texas coast we would hunt geese on the flats and one time i dropped it in saltwater (not on pupose) pulled it out and put 4 boxes of 3" and 3 1/2" shells through it with no oil and it shot just like the day i brought it home. mine doesnt seem to shoot low it just kills, kills, and keeps killing. and as far as the patterns go with the factory "accu-choke" they seemed to hold togather well at 50yrd. and the best part is the price walmart has them for around $200 in wood or synthetic

P/S:
the plug is super easy and fast to put in and out if you are into those kind of things

I have owned one for two years now and really like it. It has given me no problems. A little heavy for Pheasant hunting (That sucked), but it does a great job on Crows and I took my first turkey with it. I have never had any mechanical problems with it. I had a red dot mounted on it for a while but took it off. No reason other than I just wanted to use the fiber optic sights that came with the shotty.

If you go to the NWTF site and search for 835's you'll get all the info ya need. The short version is a bunch of people hate'm and a bunch of people love'm. The personal experience I have had with'm is they suck worse than a Kirby vacuum. My oldest son had one....big jamming problem even with 2.75" shells.

He got rid of it and hasn't looked back since.....Glad he bought his gun first, cause I learned from his ordeal and I bought a 870 Super Mag Remmy. I have not had any problems with my gun, not to say some folks haven't.

I had an 835 for years as my only shotgun. I used it alot for everything-deer,turkey,skeet, small game etc. I never had a problem with it in anyway nor has my brother who I passed it on to.
On the other hand I have a beautiful 870 wingmaster that more often than not will end up with a backwords shell in the chamber if you try for fast repeated shots. Now that gun is a boat paddle in my book.

from what I am reading on it isa hit or miss gun. some have had good experiences with it. but if you had the choice between this or a over under .223/12ga what would you get? more then likely would get a savage or a spartan.

My dad had an 835 made in the early 90's and jammed up often. Once it jammed up so bad that it had to be taken to a gunsmith and have the spent case removed. I asked my gunsmith while he was soaking it in his solvent tank what the heck was wrong with these Mossbergs? He told me "in the early 90's mossberg had a machine problem that rendered the chambers in thousands of barrels off by a few thousands of an inch, intern causing a jamming problem with countless guns." He also advised me "when cleaning the gun leave it as "dry" as you can when done, as the "bad" barrels on the mossbergs seemed to shot better without a bunch of lube to get mixed with dust and dirt and cause a "gunk up" intern making the jams an even bigger head-ache.

A couple of years ago I was given an 835 ulti-mag for christmas and it shoots like a champ. I am hard on shotguns and have put this gun through it's share of hell and it keeps on tickin. Last year I fell (we wont get into that) in the Arkansas River here in Colorado. When I pulled that gun up it's mag tube was full of sand and the shells would not feed into the chamber as a spent case was ejected. I took it apart on the bank, washed the sand out of the barrel, mag tube, and chamber housing with river water and it shot good the rest of the day. It got a good cleaning when I got home but it still did the job that day. In short I like my newer 835 and hate my dad's older 835.

Another thought for you is, Do you really need 3-1/2" Capability??? Correct me if I'm wrong but the "hevi-shot dead coyote load's in 3-1/2" have 54. That's only 4 more than the 3"'s 50 pellets. And they are both shot at the exact same velocity.

Take care Joey

right know in pa you can not use the dead coyote load because you cannot go above bb for anything else then geese. So I need it fo #2 shot and I think this will help out a lot. So basically go buy a new one from walmart or kmart and be done with it.

On the "do ya need 3.5" mags question, my thought is NO...not really, seems (feels) like those want to disconnect the 'ol brain stem.

My 835 works well but pattered terrable till I talked with George Trueloc, third try does well with both lead and hevi-shot.

I did pretty well with Winchester Supreme 3" size 4 shot out to 35yds with my 835 and the ulti full choke. It put a jake down with authority at 30yds this past spring.

When I was setting up my shotty for the hunt, I asked my turkey hunting mentor about 3.5" rounds. He told me that 3.5" was overkill in his opinion. His shotgun only uses 2.75" and he gets one every year.

I've had one since 1996, bought new, and I've never had an once of problem with. I've put thatthing through hell and back duck hunting, chukar hunting, pheasant hunting, grouse hunting, etc. It's been a reliable as any gun I've ever owned. For a 12 gauge with a 3.5" chamber that can be readily found just a hair under $300, I'd say mine's been a great value. Having that said, it's no beauty queen and it's heavier than I'd prefer. But it's still my workhorse shotgun; reliable and up to the task.

Is a 3.5 necessary? I don't know that it is. I wanted something to handle big loads for geese, cranes and swans. However, I don't know that it has any more "stopping power" than a 3". Sure have been a heck of a lot of big birds fall to guns chambered 2.75" and 3". If you do shoot 3.5" shells, make sure you're wearing a heavy coat or two. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The only time I've had a jam with shot shells is when I shot 3 1/2" buckshot through it. Man, did that hurt! But at times when I shoot 2 3/4" sabot slugs it will jam up and much force is needed to eject the empty hull. Other times it is smooth. I use the after market Mossburg fully rifled, ported, cantilever scope mount barrel for the slugs and the factory overbored barrel for the shotshells. Who knows why it jams and then doesn't jam? It is mainly used to shoot whitetails and is accurate but there have to be better shotguns out there but you will have to pay more for it.

Ben,
I may be wrong but I believe on furbearers we can use size BB in lead and size T in non-toxic. I'll have to check the book but Dead Coyote loads should be legal.
