I have a question for all you Mauser fans.I want to reload for my 8x57 98K Mauser.i want to my local gunshop to see what they had to offer for 8mm bullets an found some .318 an some .323 bullets. My "experts" behind the count at the gunshop couldnt tell me which bullets to use for my Mauser. One said use the .318 an then the other said use either the .318 or the .323 lead.So I came home an looked up on Midway USA an found both sizes available. So guys which size do I use or can I use both sizes?
Thanks for you help.
Jim

The early 8mm Mauser bore size was .318, and was called the "S" bore - I don't know what year the Germans changed, but all WW-II mausers are the .323 bore size.

The .318s are mostly found in the early 1900's multi barrel guns like the Drillings.

You want .323 bullets.

So Jim slug your bore and mike the results. Get some fishing sinkers (the soft lead ones with a hole down the center that are just a little to big for your bore).

Oil the bore with a patch, then using a brass rod drive the sinker thru the bore. Use a big hammer and good strokes. You don't want to just tap it thru, but drive it thru.

Mike the slug that results and it'll tell you if you need .319 or .323 bullets.

I'd use the size that most closely fits the bore.
