Dead Down Wind
Well-known member
Thursday night October 16th, we were in one of our huts and a small female came into around 120 yards, grass and weeds are hip high to me and in am 6’6” tall. We looked for this coyote early Friday morning and ended up not finding it.
Friday 17th -
1st stand blank
2nd stand we walked across the road, i started with Blondie Long Howl with a little bit of Gunner (My blind Catahoula dog) then switched to PDog distress and had a male come charging in. 1 down
3rd stand we called in a butt load of cows, nothing else.
4th stand we spotted two coyotes around 1,200 yards out, they didn’t want to play.
5th stand blank
6th stand blank
7th stand blank and 73 degress
8th stand we saw one at 600 yards - no shot taken
9th stand i glassed 2 coyotes in the stumble meandering around at 700 yards, the eventually walked into 444 yards and i took the shot at 444 yards off my shooting sticks - MISS!
10th and final stand just before dark, we had stopped at a ranch where the owner had called me to help rid some coyotes, his dad was there as well and he also gave us permission, as we were talking, the coyotes lit up about a mile to the west, we high tailed it over to a tree row and got set up. Weeds were ridiculously high, about 10 minutes in Steve said he saw a flash in the weeds. I continued to glass as the sun was going down and we spotted her at 181 yards looking towards the caller, Steve took the shot and down she went.
We picked up another 6 sections of decent calling ground. They booted a guy that’s scares more coyotes than he kills, and the guy doesn’t like to get out and walk to stands, he is a road hunter.
Saturday - Winds were ferocious, Steve had bought some rifles and 1 pistol from a guy in Kearney Nebraska so spent most of the day driving, Steve got his new toys. Steve traded some knives his Grandpa made, Mr Ruana, any of you knife guys heard of him?
Saturday night Steve shot 2 coyotes at one of our huts, i was in another hut and didn’t see or hear a single coyote. I don’t think he took a picture.
Day 3 Sunday
1st stand We started on a piece of public property calling over an area we call Pet Land, this guy doesn’t let anybody hut and it is a 100% coyote sighting stand and probably a 75% killing stand.
10 minutes in and we haven’t seen a coyote, i look up to my left and there is a white pickup with what believe i is Antelope hunters, 10 day Pronghorn Buck season.
2nd stand we go back onto private which has public on the West side about 1 mile away, i start calling to the West with the sun at our backs, i then see a pickup 1 1/2 miles ways to the West. Bout the same time I spot a coyote between us and the pickup, the coyote proceeds to go South. I continued to call and then we spotted 4 hunters in Orange straight West of us. This stand was a bust.
3rd - 4th stands are blank - Temperature is now at 80 degrees
5th stand i shot a small Female - She came into Coyote Coon Fight
6th - 10th stands are blank, however, we did hear a group just before dark and they were too far away to make a move on them.
Day 4 - Monday, Winds are gusting to 45mph plus - complete bust! We made a Lamb rum to replenish our piles, the heat just melts the lambs down to nothing.
Day 5 -
1st stand - 33 degrees, we went to a big bowl that usually holds coyotes, we perched on top of the hill so we can see a couple miles to the North, i started out with Blondie Long Howl and then went silent for 5 minutes, i spotted a coyote to the NW of me and it looked like it wasn’t coming in. As i was watching this coyote i had a pair barking & howling to the North, i spotted them at around 350 yards, i then switched the call over to Cyanide and here they come, they split up about 200 yards out. I then noticed the one i was watching earlier had popped the crest of a hill about 450 yards out coming towards us in a deep drainage. I got onto the left coyote around 183 yards and took the shot, down he went and Steve made a miraculous shot on the 2nd one running. He did need a follow up shot to seal the deal. Never saw the 1st one again. Pair down and they were young pups.
2nd - 3rd stands Blank
4th stand - as we were walking into a stand, we bumped a coyote never to be seen again
5th stand - This is a 5,000 acre ranch that has an active gravel pit, started to go in and realized there were guys with Semi trucks/trailers and a loader so we backed out of there and went down the road 1/2 mile. Got out and started our stand, we could see for miles and nothing, then i noticed a Brown 2500 Duramax coming down the road towards the gravel pit. It was the landowner, he pulled his truck up to the fence we were crossing to head back to Steve’s vehicle. He got out and i said - How are you doing Colby? He said good! Long story short - the kid that got kicked off the 2 new ranches we had gained hunts this ranch as well and the owner said - i think i am going to just leave the hunting to XXX and he told us we could hunt the rest of the day and I politely said we will pass and move on.
Supposedly the other guy hunts at night and is a county Road Grader operator and he does a good job on grading the county roads. I should have said - That’s his job, I didn’t and we went on our merry way.
6th stand - we spotted 2 coyotes a mile away - they didn’t want to play!
7th stand - we bumped another coyote walking in, did a walkabout for around 2 miles and never saw a coyote
10th stand - Blank and an icy 75 degrees
11th stand - Nothing
Decided to check our night rifles, i was off by 2 1/2 inches high and 2 inches right, Steve was 2 inches high and 2 1/2 inches right
Every evening we would go down to one of the ranchers shops to change out our gear, never failed, coyotes howling to the East of his place after dark and the wind was always coming out of the West or we would have made a move on them!
Tuesday night i shot a coyote from one of our huts, i looked for it yesterday and couldn’t find it, i did however find the one i had shot the first night from the hut, coyotes ate on him.
Day 6 -
We decided to swap vehicles and take my Duramax and Polaris ranger into Nebraska.
1st stand, i spotted a coyote around 800 yards out and he went over a hill to the North
2nd stand we went over the hill to the North in hopes it would be out there somewhere, i did some glassing and spotted 2 coyotes to the West of our location, I whistled at Steve and then pointed, he has a nice set of Leica Range finding Binos and doesn’t use them like he should. Anyhow I switched over to Coyote Coon Fight and here they come, one was trying to get behind a hill so he could smell us, i stopped him and down he went. The other coyote didn’t present a shot. Big aggressive male!
3rd Stand - I was calling to the South into a cross wind, spotted another coyote to the SW of our location, he wasn’t coming.
4th stand - we were on top of a plateau looking North, Steve was too my right, i said i see one and pointed, this coyote was standing there at 536 yards, Steve was somewhat closer but he was carrying his .223 Ranch Rifle. Next time i looked over, the Coyote had laid down (Bastard). I told Steve i was going to shoot, i dialed up 1.9Mil and calculated maybe an inch too much into the crosswind, BAM! I hit him and probably took a leg off, it got up and spun around and i tried to get another round into it, it was behind a little hill. We got into the ranger and head over with finding blood and no coyote.
5th stand Blank
6th stand Blank
7th stand - I told Steve if we don’t see a coyote on this stand, i am calling it. We called for 15 minutes and glassed as hard as i could hoping to see another coyote, no luck so we loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly, Hills that is!

Takeaways - It’s too Freaking hot out, coyotes were not responding to Edible distress sounds , they were completely silent, are not hitting our bait stations, probably laying on a far hillside listening b it not coming, overall just a waste of time and money!
I forgot to mention, I put up 2 tactacam Reveal cameras on October 11th over a couple dead piles and have received a whopping 2 photos of Coyotes and 1 of the 2 was from last night.
We didn’t need to fire up our heaters because it was warm and toasty in our huts.
Steve ended the trip with 7 down and i ended with 7 down.
We wont be back out until 8th and 9th of November, pray for colder temps and some dusting of snow
