95gr sierra MK on coyotes........my experiences

I have been shooting the 95gr sierra mk in a 6x250 for coyotes lately. I push them about 3050 in a 21" barrel. I have killed quite a few in the last couple months and I have decided this is definitely not a good bullet for coyotes unless you are interested in saving fur. I shot one a few minutes ago at about 250 yds tight behind the shoulder. it took off like a rocket and I really thought I had missed. I went down to where it was standing and saw the bullet impact in the dirt. no hair or blood was in the area. I took up the track and thought the dog must have jumped down in a drainage but ended up finding about 50yds from where it was shot. I flipped it over and found a very small exit wound and a dab of blood on the fur. I have only had two go down at the shot. one was a pup at VERY close range. the bullet made quite a mess of him. the other was and old male at 200 plus yds. he went down at the shot but there was very little exterior damage any way. every other dog I have shot has run a considerable distance and most were very well placed shots. I think I am done with this bullet for coyotes. you may want to try it if you are a fur hunter but I am going with the sierra 85 hpbt or the 105 amax from now on unless I can get my hands on some of the 87gr vmax.

I am aware that the matchkings were designed with paper targets in mind but some people here advocate FMJ projectiles for saving fur so I see no reason not to use a "match" bullet IF it works well. in this case I didn't care for the results.

Who advocates FMJ for yotes?

Everything I have read hear says don't use them.

I have used 6mm bullets quite a bit on coyotes for the last few years and two bullets that stand out so far for me are the 70gr Nosler BT and the 75gr VMax. I have shot them from 2950fps in the 6X45mm up to 3350fps in the 6mmDTi and they kill quite well and on coyotes rarely exit on well placed shots.
I have a 6mm barrel sitting here and have considered a 6mm/250 so tell me what you think about the caliber and what type gun is it.

do a quick search for fur friendly loads and you will see a lot of reference to using FMJ bullets.

the rifle is a blueprinted 700sa with a 1-8 twist barrel 21" in length. I like the caliber very well but I don't think its quite as good as the 6xc. I am actually about to rechamber the barrel to straight 243 or 6xc.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's when fur prices were sky high, I tried the FMJ's in 22 and 6mm, you will loose animals with good hits, not all of them, but quite a few.

We killed scads of coyotes with the 60g Sierra hp out of the 243 and 6 Rem, great killer bullet and tought enough to go through shoulders and hip joints.

85g Sierra BTHP is a great bullet. I love the Sierra 80g Blitz BT, along with the no longer made Sierra 80g Single shot pistol bullet. These two bullets behind a max load of IMR 4064 at 3400 fps is sudden death for coyotes near and far.
 
We have shot deer with the 52gr matchking, and everyone of them only went a few steps. I use the 100gr matchking in the 257wby. I guess everyone has there own experiences.
 
I have a ton of he 85hpbt and 80 blitz. I also have some of the old hornady 70sxsp. I will probably stick with the 85hpbt since this is my truck gun and I also shoot a lot of pigs and deer when they are in season.

I shot the 107SMK out of my 6-284 at 3420Fps and they leveled every dog i shot. Alot of my broadside shots never exited and some blew huge exit holes.
 
I am thinking that they must have used thick jackets on this particular bullet since it was designed for 9 twist 243 and other large 6mm rifles. I have had explosive results with other MK bullets but these are different.

I've had good luck with a 95 Berger VLD at 3050 from a 6 Dasher.

No huge exits unless you go through the shoulders.
