9mm for coyotes

Anyone used it for coyotes? I just got my RRA 9mm upper and was thinking of packing it along for the stands with short range shots....100yds or less.

I was thinking of loading 124gr Gold Dot at around 1200fps

I did it with a Baretta 92 once 85 yard shot 125 hp of some sort (I don't remember) yote droped after a couple of steps, bullet was a pass-through through the lungs.

9mm works and works surprising well. If you keep you shots close you wont have a problem. I used to use the cheap lead bullets and they worked so a good bullet will surely work. I see no need to get something good if you keep your shots close you won't have any problems. It sure is fun. HAPPY HUNTING

Should work like a charm. As stated, keep shots inside of 100 yards and the trusty old 9mm should work very well. The 9mm is a very good penetrator at reasonable distances so penetration should not be an issue. I think your bullet choice and apx. velocity would be excellent Coyote medicine.

Thanks guys. I am still in the assembly stage. I locked everything up tight just checking upper to lower without the "9mm hammer" in the lower yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Took awhile to fix that little mess.

I am still waiting on the mag block and mags....and a DPMS hammer.

I've used a 9mm AR carbine before....

Gold dots are kinda expensive IMHO for coyotes. Any JHP or JSP like remmy/winny bulk bullets will do.
If you load using pistol data you will see gains about 1-200ft/sec over the pistol load data when shot from a carbine.

If you load for the carbine and use slower powder you can get 3-500ft/sec velocity gains compared to handgun data.

TexaxAG,
Do you need a different hammer when using a 9mm upper compared to a .223 upper. I'm asking because I'm thinking about getting a 9mm upper for my S&W lower. I just think it would be a very fun gun to shoot. I just hadn't heard anything about needing a different hammer. Thanks for the info.

A buddy of mine just bought the Rock River 9mm.

It is a real nice rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

He got it for shooting at metal targets, as he 223's were causing too much damage to them.

I try to get him out coyote hunting, but he always has an excuse not to go. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It just needs to be a "DPMS" style hammer. Easy to tell. Top corner of hammer will not have a notch cut in it. It will be flat and square. Don't make the mistake I did and mate the 9mm uppper with a lower that has the notched hammer just for fun. If you cycle the bolt, it will hang up with the bolt half open and is $&#@ to get apart.

You will also need a mag block(not cheap) and mags. I ordered C-products 32 and 20rd. mags.

I have a Hi-point 9mm Carbine. Had it for 15+ years. Topped w/ a 4x soviet scope and loaded w/ 124gr cast lead it is a great little 75 yard vermin gun. I started using it around the barn for Rats, woodchucks and fox. I loaded a bunch of 147gr HP's (subsonics) that are real fun on rats and squirrels. Man do they go flying. Word spreads fast among the vermin.
