9mm HP expansion in hide

I am planning to try raccoon calling this fall and am considering taking a 9mm PCC into the woods with a suppressor and some subsonic ammunition to reduce sound out in the woods. I'm not planning to shoot farther than 50 yards.

Has anyone had luck shooting 9mm hollow points into coyotes, foxes or raccoons with good expansion? What bullet were you using?
 
I've shot a lot of rock chucks with 115 Critical Defense and PMC 115 JHP's out of my little P365. They don't stop 'chucks too cleanly. 115 Blazer brass FMJ's work just as well. A PCC will get more velocity, out of those loads, but subs might be kind of comparable. The 9mm is just weak sauce.

buddy of mine has been whacking n stackin foxes and coons this year with the 124gr HST's.

i had ordered a batch of 147's from a vendor (pulldowns) and got 124's instead, and they just replaced them, so i donated some to help protect his flock.

he said they were pretty good medicine out of his ar pistol and carbine, over the spread of a couple dozen kills at ranges out to 50-ish yds.

he's just loading them to standard, not +p range or anything.
 
I've never shot subsonic 9mm bullets but I can't think they're less powerful than a .22lr and I've killed plenty of raccoons with one of those at 50 yards and in. I would think those bullets would be more likely to tumble after hitting bone which would do damage. Enough damage they wouldn't go far. And if you hit vitals they ain't gonna run far if they run at all. If you put a hole in their heart, lungs or head they won't make it too terrible far.

As for coyotes I would think you would want something that doesn't flatten or open up quite as much if they're going much slower. A bullet that penetrates further through muscle and bone and tumbles would probably benefit you way more than one that hits a shoulder blade and stops in it or just on the other side of it. Not saying that would be the case because I don't know. The only thing you can do is give it a try and if it doesn't work, let us know. And if it does work, let us know.
