Just FYI...
About 20% of LEO's killed in the line are by their own gun, taken away from them by a criminal and then turned on them by the murderer. That number may be less now with the widespread use of security holsters by officers. Still, it is a significant number of LEO deaths that are attributed to this cause. I have no idea of citizen deaths from the same cause. I'm just adding what information I have on police deaths caused by being disarmed. Consider this also, police are taught and trained to protect their weapon and how easily they can be disarmed, and, how to do the same to others. Few citizens have this type of training, though it is readily available in some of the better shooting/defensive tactics schools.

The Judge isn't fish nor fowl, and while it may be handy for a barn gun, or trail gun, I certainly wouldn't choose it for a primary dedicated self-defense weapon.

If it is for your wife, let her handle different pistols, and work the action herself. I made the mistake of buying my wife a Berreta 92FS, and she could not pull the double action first shot. I bought her the gun she picked a Glock 19 9mm, and it is easier for her to handle, and much easier to operate. I too was bit by the 1911 bug. I had a Stainless 1911 .45ACP safe queen that I did not want to carry, or scratch. I made the decision to sell it, and buy another glock, this time a Glock 30 45acp. It has less recoil than the 40 S&W, and is smaller than the fullsize. If the gun is to be used as a CCW, I reccommend the Glock 19, or 26. If you use quality ammo it will be just as effective as the others. Now if it is for home defense, take it from someone with personal expierence there is no substitute for a carbine type rifle, or a good 12ga. In my expierence I went past pistols to get to the rifle.
