A Burning Issue! Utah Rising!

Guys,

Just got back from western Utah from a couple of days of fun and frolic on the Fish Springs NWR. We burned almost 2000 acres of marsh for migratory bird habitat improvement and thought these would be some neat pictures for folks to gander at. Enjoy!

Awsome pics.

All firefighters have just a little bit of arsonist in them, at least all the ones I knew. My Dad is a retired firefighter, him and all his friends liked fire in its proper role. Nice photos Mike. Starting them is easier than fighting them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Looks like there was some of that lovely fragmite (sp?) going up in smoke... The more, the better! That stuff is awful! Was that the primary reason for the burn? Earlier this year, the UDWR burned some frag stands in a few WMA's around the Great Salt Lake. Cool pics!

What's fragmite? It doesn't sound like anything good.

Fragmite is a tall reed that grows in thick clumps. The top of the plant has a large plume that looks kind of like a roosters tail.

Not only that, it's a non-native plant species that's all but taking over area wetlands and shorelines. It chokes out cattails and bullrushes, as well as anything else that it has to compete with for space and nutrients. The ducks can't use it the way they can onther plants, for shelter or food. The stuff is down right impossible to get rid of, spreads like wildfire, and will rapidly fill an otherwise open spot of shallow water. Like they said in the '60's, burn baby, burn!
