A littl late night excitement

So about 30 minutes ago my sistr comes down stairs to my room shaking and telling me someone was breaking into our house, There has been a few break ins in our neighborhood witin the last few weeks. I go to our safe grab the AR and 1911 (only guns I keep loaded mags for) and throw some shoes on real quick. I go to the front door which is where she heard them I had the surefire on the AR ready to rock and throw the door open and no ones out there that I can see so I go out making sure that no ones around the house anymore, as I'm going around the house I hear something running through the desert about 50 yars behind me and to the right, an area I just came through so I spin around and start following the quick flashes of black I see I'm trying to be carefull so that I dont get into a sticky situation I see an unfimaliar car in my neighbors driveway right where the shadow was running, so I figured he was trying to get out of there I start running full sprint now I used to play in the desert all the time so I know it like the back of my hand and cut left through some prickly pear cactus whie he goes right into a cholla field that chokes up real quick, I still think this guys a burgalar so I'm being carefull and turn off the surefire and bunkerdown in some prickley pear hoping he comes near enough to get a good luck at him and hopefuly stop him. Also buyin time before the cops show up all the sudden I hear a ton of cursing and light up the area this guy who was wearing all black was COVERED in jumping cholla honestly it was terrible I was amazed he ran through it. and hes still running twoard the white SUV in my neighbors driveway hes prbably 30 yards ahead of me an just about there but theres some thick stuff in between us so I decie to try to get the plate number and just hope that helps (there was no way I was going to catch him. I try looping to the back of the car to catch a glimpse but the guy jumps in the backseat, now I'm thinking he has a gun and lay down in the desert with the AR thinking OH SH*T this probably wasn't a good idea to chase him back here (mind hes cussing the whole time covered in cholla cactus) and the suv peels out completly on adrenialine I go to try to catch the plates again, he fishtails into my neighbors mailbox (cement) it did quite the number on his suv I could hear the crunch from where I was. I get up to the driveway almost to the street, and my neighbor comes out with his shotgun (we're close neighbors) and so we start talking about what was happing and I expained my half and he goes, yeah I oticd the white expiditon in my driveway so I went out and wrote the plates down /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif all the stickers in my chest and legs right now for nothing!! I invite him over to my house to talk to the cops who just showed up and on the way back we find a pack of 4 rolls of toilet paper in my driveway next to my door and his car had an egg on it. we find out the reason that he fishtailed into the mailbox was my neighbor came out of his house with a shotgun aimed at the drivers head who apparently was a hispanic in his early 20s I bet thats the last time he tp's someones house. HAving an AR-15 and a 12 ga pointed at you and smashing your car against a cement mailbox shattering your rear quater pannel and the back and rear passeger windows probably isnt a very satisfying experiance. The cops told us that they would let us know if they come up with anything and to have a good night. I'm still so jacked up on adrenialine I dont think I'll be able to sleep my last 4 hours before my 12 hour shift tomorrow.

Weston,,,, Sit down, take ten deep breaths and let them out slowly.... 5 seconds in, hold, 10 seconds out....It will help slow down the adrenaline rush...

Who in your house was the target of the TP??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif....Your sister??... it was probably some guy that asked her for a date and she turned him down... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I hope the little sucker kept a roll in reserve for himself, as he is probably needing it right now...

Good quick response on your part..I'm glad you didn't cut a few rounds loose on him.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I would also urge you to use due caution while chasing a perp with a rifle in your hands.

If local law enforcement shows up and sees you running out of the desert, they are liable to mistake you for the badguy and fire at you.

I thought you were going to say you remained in your residence with your rifle and waited for the badguy to enter after having called police.

We just had an off duty police officer killed here in the northeast by friendly fire while chasing a guy with his weapon drawn.

Believe me it happens, and could happen to you.

Be careful and stay safe.

I definitly see where you're coming from shooter, I didnteven think about that, it was all just instinct still havn't heard anything from the cops.

Well hopefully they will track him down from the plate number your neighbor was able to get.

The bottom line is he didn't get into your house and the night ended safely for the good guys.

Take care and stay safe.

Also keep in mind that you cannot use deadly force in defense of property in any circumstances. I not trying to rain on your parade, but what you did was very wreckless. Next time, stay in your residence, call 911, and use verbal commands to deter whoever it may be. If that doesn't work and they continue into your residence, then deadly for may be justified, circumstantially. Just remember, you threatened someone with deadly force who was going to tp your house. It was more than likely an adolescent. Remember that you did not know his intentions before hand and you assumed the worst. What if he would have pulled out something you mistook for a gun and you shot him; for playing a prank. I'm not saying that we should be sheep, but if you own a gun and plan to use it for defense, make sure you do just that. Killing a teenager or going to prison for life for using unjustified force is something I doubt you ever want to live with.

One more thing, stories like this is what the anti's feed off of. A story like yours can easily be shaped into: Blood Crazed Gun owner hunts down pranksters. 'My adrenaline was pumping' is not an any way shape or form a defense for what could have happened.

You beat me to it brother /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. Shooter is exactly right. Its one thing to arm yourself and defend the inside of your home against an intruder. But going outside is risky. Remember that the only thing outside that is in jeapordy is property and property can be replaced. Understand that in order to use deadly force a cop only needs to feel that there is a threat of death or serious bodily injury, even if the facts later bear out there was no threat. The officer will be judged by his perception at the time of a rapidly evolving situation, not by what he could not have possibly known AFTER the fact.

In other words, you could be killed and the shooting would be ruled justified if you are standing in the dark armed with a rifle when the cops show up. I understand what you did and why you did it, but please think twice about it next time. The last thing in the world one of us needs on our conscience is shooting someone by mistake. Our job is stressful enough.

Glad things worked out for you in this situation.
