A Savage Axis Really?

Hello,

Im new to the board and some folks mentioned the Savag Axis as a good predator rifle? Its not allways about the money with me but a new Savage Axis and scope for 350 NIB and it has quality and will hold up? Could you folks tell me a little more on what you know about this rifle.

Thanks,

Joe

That is exactly what I bought my dad in 22-250. Trigger not very good but will still shoot 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. It was cheap enough if it gets scratched or a little blueing wore off it's not going to break any hearts. Dad carries it in his truck feeding cows.

I have a 308 done alot of shooting and it holds up and i have shoot several deer and yotes with it at 2-300 yards they are accurate out of the box I would have another one

Low end rifle that so far has proven reliable and fairly accurate. Like most Savages with the black plastic stock....it sucks. An after market stock, a mid level Nikon and you are in business after doing load work up.

Bought my son one for hunting in a .243 and it is a real shooter!! Would buy another one again if I needed a different caliber.

my 25-06 axis is a shooter, gun w/ scope for $325. you can't really go wrong with any savage, with the price on the axis makes it even better.

Love mine in 223 it shoots great and has killed lots of foxes and a few yotes. I bought just the gun and added a Nikon Buckmaster and couldnt be happier!!

Buy one at walmart for $277 with no scope. Buy a Redfield or a Nikon Prostaff, Look at Cabela's sales adds. Go hunting.

I have an Axis .223 Stainless. I've run about 3-400 rounds through it so far.

It's certainly a shooter, and as far as value for money, it's almost impossible to beat. There are many, many rifles on the market that won't shoot better than the Axis even though they cost 2-3 times as much. They may look better, they may have a smoother action, better trigger, etc, etc. But as far as the bullet hitting where the crosshairs were when you pulled the trigger, the Axis is the real deal. It's certainly capeable of shooting sub 1 inch groups all day long and even with factory ammo, I shot a 1.05 inch 5 shot group the first time out. Now that I have it dialed in with handloads, it's easily sub-1 inch for 5 shots.

IMO it will certainly hold up well over time. Especially when you consider the number of rounds the average hunter runs through a gun.

Obviously there are compromises with a gun at the price point of the Axis. It depends on what matters to you. The stock is ugly and as everyone will tell you, the trigger is poor.

But even if you spent $89 to get a Rifle Basix fully adjustable trigger, you're still ahead of the game IMO.

I opted to do a trigger job and I went from 7+ pounds 3 pounds and the feel is at least acceptable.

It all depends on what you want and value. If you want fine wood and checkering, a breaks-like-glass trigger, and flawless blueing, add at least $500 to your budget and look elsewhere. If you want a gun that goes bang and puts a bullet where you were aiming, the Savage is very tough to beat for the price.

RSG is right. Get one with no scope. Buy a decent scope and you are good to go. If you buy the package gun take the scope, base and rings off and throw them in the trash. Then get a good base, rings and scope. You should be fine. Savage makes a good rifle.

For $280 plus tax and phone call, it is hard to beat. Typical Savage accuracy with a heavy, but tunable trigger. Do a search for how to threads to get a clean 3-3.25# pull. I agree that the package scope is not much of a deal. Buy the bare gun, add Weaver bases and rings, and a $150-$200 scope and you have a keeper.

The Axis doesn't come with the Accutrigger. Have you even ever seen an Edge in person?

I've owned a lot of Savages (but not the Axis) and they've all been great shooters out of the box. Probably the best value out there. I wouldn't hesitate at all to go to the Axis and, as other suggested, buy the rifle only and put a good scope on it.

I bought an Edge in 25/06 for my wife to use before it became the Axis... after proper barrel break-in I was amazed at just how accurate this rifle is especially for $279.00. It shot 4 shots almost through the same hole and the 5 was about 1/2 to the right.. It did the same thing with the next five also.. The bullet was the 117 Sierra over H-4350 with a remington 9.5 primer.. FOR the MONEY you'd be hard pressed to find a better shooting rifle, it will out shoot several other that cost many time more than it..only complaint is getting the clip out!!

Forget Axis/Edge whatever the heck it is today and get a Marlin xs7. Mine was 307.00 of GB.

No need for a trigger and boyd stocks if you desire but the syntehtic is very good. I saw a review where a stock xs7 in 25-06 shot a .2 group with factory rounds.
