ackley - flat primers

First time loading 250 savage AI after fire forming.

Loaded 37,38 and 39 grs. of varget, win. 250 fireformed brass, WLR primer. These loads are out of the Sierra book.

Primers are extreamly flat. The bolt lift is real easy, no smears on case head. Only negative was the primers. Are WLR primers softer than say Federal's? I understand pressure signs are somewhat different with AI cases. If anybody has any expierence that they can share I would surly appriciate it.

A flat primer isn't a real good way to judge pressure. I check the case over and also the bolt lift too. I always get flatter primers with my loads

I know that primers should not be the primary tool to judge pressure. The bolt lift is as if the chamber did not have a case in it, very easy.

I full length resized using a redding full length bushing die. The bushing was size is .281 and it did not seem to be holding the bullet as tight as when using a standaed resizing die. This is the first time using this die.

Just trying to make sure you are not bumping the shoulder back to create excessive headspace. The true test will be the longevity of the brass. If you are getting 6-8 loadings or more then your pressure is fine.

Pcammo, I will try and adjust the die so only the neck is sized and not bump the shoulder if possible.

Will also try some different primers.

Don't change more than one variable, primer change or die adjustment, or it will be difficult to tell what change made the improvement.

A little too much headspace will definitely cause flattened primers. Screw the sizing die down just until the empty case chambers easily.

Must admit, I really like this place. I am always learning something new and this thread has been great. Coming from an "old guy" that is not easy.

And no, there is absolutely no sarcasm in that statement.

When fire forming for an ackley chamber you should have a crush fit. ( .003 to .006) The bolt handle should be a little hard to close on a none ackley brass. Sounds like you have to much head space for your brass/ die setting.The flat primer is caused when you fire your gun and the primer blows out of the brass agianst bolt face before the brass forms to the chamber, because of the excessive head space. You can seat your bullets to contact the lands and that will hold your case agianst the bolt face. Good luck.
