Adjustable Objective or not?

Lots of good points here....

My Leupolds are all 4.5x14 AO (5 of them).
I use them at 12 power setting w/AO set 100. This is good for 200 yds.

But out to 300 + yards, then I turn the AO to 200.

But, do you really need the AO? That can only be answered by yourself and not anyone else. It all depends on your own eyes as to how well they will focus for you.
25 years ago I didn't need a AO on a scope, but now it surely helps my focus.

Just like a pair of Binoculars, must have that focus to see things clear at different ranges.

Here's what I mean;
I had a new 4.5x 14 Leupold BC scope (non AO) and at 350 yds the house I was looking at was "blurred", but I had 3 different guys look thru the scope and to them the house was "crystal clear". So it wasn't a problem with the scope, but a problem with my eyes. So I solved the problem by selling it and going the same size but an AO.

The less adjustments the better . No AO on any hunting scope. They are for targets only!
thats my 2cents.

CC---I had a non-AO 4.514x40 Leupold also. On anything after 10x it looked absolutley terrible. I took it outside and compared it to some of my other AO scopes, just to make sure it was not me. It wasn't........

Which scope companies have them set at 100yds?

Nikon. Their rimfire scopes are set at 50 yards.

We're talking about centerfire rifle scopes here. As far as I know all are set at 150yds, but maybe I am wrong. Just was wondering who sets them at 100yds......

All my varmint/predator rifle and 1 long range deer rifle have AO scopes. Age and many years of staring at computer screens are taking a toll on my eyes. AO scopes definitely are more clear and better focused for me.

- About using the AO as a focus. Frequently the sharpest focus is not necessarily where you need to set your AO adjustment. The AO is all about reducing parallax. If you move your head/eye a little and your cross hair appears to move on the target your AO is not adjusted correctly.

- Fixed parallax scopes. At one thime MOST centerfire scopes had their scopes set parallax free at 100 yards (rimfire scope are set at 50 yards). For the past few years companies have been using different parallax free distances, frequently it's 150 yards, others may use other distances.

I have the same scope, and yes it's useless after 10X.
I bought it because the price was so low, I couldn't pass it up.
Now I know why the guy was letting it go so cheap.

Not sure what Leupold was thinking on that one...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've only tried it at 100. Have you tried it farther?
Maybe the paralex is set at 150 or 200???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Reguardless,, I think it confirms that AO is mandatory on anything over 10X.

I just got this scope, and with hunting season going I really haven't had much time to mess with it. I plan to call Leupold in the next week or two.
It'll be interesting to see what they have to say.

Parallax should be set at 150yds.

What happened was that Leupold actually stopped making said scope with an AO. Customers complained, and they started making AO version again.......

Hey, they may be. Nikon was the only one that listed their focal distance (on the Optic Zone site). I bought the 4-12 Monarch AO because I needed at least one "target" scope.

Gottcha,,,,,,,,,I'll try it at 150 and up. I put it on a 22/250, so that might work.
Anything over 300 I can't hit anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

2muchgun your right on there.

They also stop making the 4.5x14 with Duplex reticule also, but after enough complaining from people, they started back to putting them back in. They just though that everyone could see the "fine" reticule with out any problem.......

The owner of the local gun shop here, which he sells 1000 and 1000 dollars of Leupold's every year, put it point blank to Leupold; "if you can't send me the 4.5x14 with the "standard duplex reticule" then we will cease to do business. Well, Leupold listened and the owner got his way.
End of story.

I had a 4.5-14 non AO that was not parallax free at 100 or 150. I certainly don't care for AO scopes but it is almost a requirement after 10. So my favorite scope is the 3.5-10.
