Advice, ideas for a late cow hunt CO unit 10 this weekend?

Well, my grandson has a cow elk tag that he can use in Unit 10 through the 15th of this month. He did not get to hunt the regular rifle season with us cause he screwed up and had some pretty bad mid terms grades!

He got his nose to the grindstone and got those grades up to B average so now he gets to go hunting!

We have never been that far west to hunt, but it looks like there is plenty of BLM land in there. If anybody knows the area and has any tips or suggestions, we would be much obliged for your help!
 
Hey let me know. I wish I saw it earlier. I could have got you pointed in teh right direction.

Hey Elks, Thanks for the offer. By the time you spotted this we were in unit 10! Left town very early and went straight to the Elk Springs area. Spotted two cows from 40 but were uncertain of the property ownership. We had some maps but by the time we got it figured out they were long gone!

We covered a lot of country west of Elk Springs but we never found elk in there. We switched to hunting the BLM to the SW of the Dinosaur Monument road on Sat and started having a bit more luck. Lots of movement had been going on. Most elk seemed to have crossed the Yampa and were enjoying the good life in unit 11 on private land. Several herds exceeding 100 animals.

It was tough going in that snow. We patroled that road a bit at first hoping to glass something that we could stalk. No such luck! Then we took off on foot and covered a bit over four miles. That's about all this old man could take!!!! We got into a herd of about 25 and were able to stalk within 400 yards but no closer. Since we had a laser range finder and there was absolutely no wind, I let him take a 400 yard shot from a rest. Shot went just under the belly of his chosen cow. They immediately started moving out and dissapeared into the heavy juniper cover to the SW.

There were quite a few hunters out there but as far as I could see we were the only ones that actually got out of the truck!!

I thought I had seen somewhere here on the board that you were moving from Craig?

Long story short, I did move from Craig to Rangely. Spent a year there and am now in Parachute (Near Rifle). At any rate I am glad to see that you found some elk at least and managed a shot. I really wished I had saw the post sooner. I have always enjoyed that country and look forward to chances to getout there.

The snow this year is a little deep. Spent an hour trying to dig out a couple weekends ago. All the people you saw were probably in the same boat. That unit 10 area tends to get all the lay over on the youth tags, especially from locals. The actual number of tags given is not real high. Add that to the fact that it is a little longer hunt and people will usually not hunt to hard and end up eating tag soup. My experience in with 10 during that late season has been trying to call around the elk hunters for yotes. I have noticed that most will not get out and walk, and many will not even bother getting off a road that is not plowed or been travelled a bunch.

At anyrate, if your ever in the NW part of the state(Most of which I know pretty well) look me up.

There is always next year... Atleast that is what I am telling myself after this years disappointing showing.
