Advice on ER Shaw, or Cooper

I have been considering a custom or semi-custom gun. I am looking at ER Shaw and Cooper. I have two actions rem 700 and a stevens/savage action that i can send to ER Shaw and get made what i want and put my own stock and trigger on the barreled action. Or i can have them build their Mark VII which is the accu-trigger Savage action and really is not much more expense to have the complete rifle made by them. If i have them work on my action i am sure the time is less than 14 months to return, getting a barrel only is around 6-8 weeks. But building a rifle from them is 14 months. I am not that patient. The Cooper rifles which are 90 percent higher i can get in approx. 4 months and the disadvantage with Cooper is the calibers i want i would like a faster twist barrel. Iknow the Cooper is a top notch gun. Looked at them at Scheels.

Need some input on what you guys have experienced with the quality of either of the guns.

I have about 5 different calibers that i am interested in. Hard to buy a used one. I guess i will stick with new.

Calibers i am thinking about are 22-250 AI, 243 AI, 22-243, 22-6mm, or 6mm AI. I know the companies do not have this caliber.

Would like some imput.

Thanks,

Strong

Simple answer.
Send that 700 action to Pac-Nor and have any of the above calibers installed. Drop it in a HS (or B&C) stock, You'll be in it for less than a grand with stock and a decent trigger and be shooting in about 12 weeks.

You can even send em a few dummy rounds and have em set the free bore up where ever you want it (as in zero free bore).

Here's a list of their wildcat reamers.

That question is along the lines of what is better a horse or an atv. You will have two different camps giving you opinions on what they like or have spent money on. Personally I would go with Cooper as I have zero love for ER Shaw even though there quality may have picked up from years back. You will now have a lot of guys come along and tell you Shaw is good to go. Horse vs ATV debate. I think you will have very few people argue with the above Pac-Nor opion from above though, that is getting closer to the horse-mule debate there.

Well put!
I would agree with ya about Cooper too, if it weren't for the cartriges he's interested in.
Other than Cooper,,, the obvious answer is a "Quality" after market barrel. PN fills that bill and then some.
I'm partial to Mules

I heard that in the past that Shaw barrels were hit and miss. Well, I have three rifles (one .221 FB and two .223) that are wearing a ER Shaw barrels and all three are half inch at 100 yard shooters. They all shoot so well that if I ever wear out the Krieger barrel that is on my .220 Swift I think that I will just have Shaw put one of their barrels back on it.

My AR-15 varminter has a 24" Shaw barrel on it and my first time at the range with the gun it was shooting 5 into a dime groups. Can you guess that I was impressed? I certainly was. I let a buddy shoot it and the very first time he shot it he did the same as I did.

I think that ER Shaw will treat you very well. Having said that, I too would rather have a Cooper, but money is money and I think that Shaw has the most bang for the buck.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

nuthing wrong with shaw barrels.PN makes great barrels but if yer on a budget i wouldnt even think twice on the shaw barrels.

agian for shaw. it a 6 month wait for the barreled action but mine was a mauser this time. i like the barrels and the accuracy from them. i got a shilen for another build and i cannt tell the difference in the two even with the same ammo. the shilen shoots left, the shaw right. thats with the same ammo. for the price i cannt beat it. no complaints

Thanks for the tip on the Pac-Nor Barrels. I will definitely look into them. I looked on the site access you left me RePete and if i can not find something on there i like i am to darn particular.

I agree with you guys on the Coopers i was at Scheels today and they had a Phenoix in a Model 54 if it had not been so crowded because of the holiday buying i would of had it taken out of the display case. That would have probably reduced my pocket book. It was extremely hard to walk out with only a new Nosler #6 reloading book. Had to buy something. I do not buy shoes and matching handbags so why not a new gun to go with my new ghillie suit!!!!! Scheels had a Cooper single shoot in 6.5-284 for $1300. Was not a bad price. Only thing it was in a single shot. Want to stay with a repeater shooting coyotes.

The only problem i have with the Coopers they only offer, starting recently, the 22-250 in 1/12 twist and i am wanting a 1/10 twist. I called and talked with a rep earlier in the week about their rifles. I also called a dealer and visited with him and it usually takes about 4 months to get a order back. Pac-nor may end up being the answer, unless i want to stay with the 243 AI and they offer it in the 1/10 twist.

RustyDust, how do you like the 220 Swift? I can Ackley the 22-250, but the 220 Swift already has the same ballastics, without the work, and you can buy the dies a little cheaper. I have the 22-250 brass, though. Noticed the PD shot. Ataboy. Love to do the PD thing too.

Basically it is going to come down to how much i want to budget for my custom or semi-custom rifle and how long i want to wait.

Thanks, guys

Just get a Savage long range hunter. And you will have a good accurate rifle for long range. Without hyaving to do all the custom work. Those Savage rifles are winning alot of long range competitions!!!!

I bought a large ring 98 for 100 bucks from a pawn shop. They are:
drill tap for scop
true reciever
true bolt lugs
install comercial shroud
replace military bolt with thier bent teardrop
install 24" .875 muzzle flited barrel

Total shop ticket was 615.00 shipped. Thats getting everything from them, I removed the old barrel first.

Ill have 1500 into when done and together but itll be the way I want it. The scope I got os about the same cost as all the work. I like that when I call er I talk to the same guy every time, Chris. I also like that I can make several payments to them instead of dropping itall at once. I made my order puthalf down and kept adding more to it, shroyd and handle. ill keep going to them, ive done 2 savages, 1 remmy 700 and now 2 mauseres with their barrels. Next is a 2506 on a mauser action for the wife.

Nasty, have you been having the job done in Chrome Moly or the SS? I have looked around at pawn shops, looking for a beater to rebuild on. You came out with a good deal on the 98. What the size of your groupings with shaw barrels at 100 yds?
